By the grace of Hashem,

26 Shevat* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I duly received your letter of 21 Shevat*, in which you briefly describe the activities conducted by Chabad*, the Chassidic* gatherings, and above all the strengthening of the study of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life. An addition in this direction must therefore be made, according to the Injunction that one must know elevation in the domain of holiness. I hope that, in accordance with the statement of our Sages*, this study will indeed lead to action, will strengthen concrete fulfillment, down to daily existence.

May Hashem grant that the impression of these Chassidic* gatherings and the decisions taken, of the emotion experienced at this propitious moment, exert their effect during the days, weeks, and months that follow, in order to advance from one stage to the next, so that "you shall spread forth" (note 1: "To the west and to the east, to the north and to the south," in accordance with the slogan of the year 5719 (1959)). You will also influence your friends by speaking to them and, above all, by setting a good example. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

N.B.: You ask me about the meaning of: "And you shall spread forth..." (note 2: On the necessity of taking part in the dissemination of the Mitzvos*). Now, you are a student of the Yeshivah*, and it is therefore clear that your essential role is the study of the Torah*. Nevertheless, our Sages* affirm that "he who claims to possess only the Torah*..." (note 3: "Does not possess even the Torah*." Alongside study, another activity therefore remains conceivable). It is therefore indispensable, at least from time to time, to concretely assume such a mission, including in a practical manner. And, "nothing withstands the will."

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מכ"א שבט, בו כותב ר"פ מהפעולות בעניני חב"ד, ההתועדויות וכו' ובעיקר מההתחזקות בלימוד תוה"ק תורת חיים והוספה בזה כהציווי להעלות בקדש.

ותקותי אשר מתאים לדברי רז"ל אשר הלימוד הוא שמביא לידי מעשה, הוספה בפועל עד לחיי היום יומים.

ויהי רצון, אשר רושם ההתועדויות וההחלטות שהיו אז בעת רצון והתעוררות, יפעלו בכל הימים שבועות וחדשים שלאחרי זה בהליכה מחיל אל חיל באופן דופרצת וגם על חבריו יפעול בכל האמור ע"י דבוריו עמהם ובעיקר על ידי היותו דוגמא חי' בזה.

לשאלתו בהנוגע לופרצת, הרי בהיותו בן ישיבה, מובן שעיקרו הוא בלימוד התורה בנגלה וחסידות, אבל הודיעונו רז"ל כל האומר אין לי אלא תורה וכו', שלכן מוכרחת עכ"פ מזמן לזמן עבודה האמורה גם בעניני מעשה, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
