By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, informing me of the date of your birthday. No doubt you have adopted, on this occasion, the custom recently taken up by the Chassidim*, consisting of giving Tzedakah* on the very day of the birthday, before Shacharis* and Minchah*, or on the eve of this date if it falls on a Shabbos* or a festival; of fixing an additional study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*; of being called to the Torah* on the very day of the birthday or on the Shabbos* that precedes it; and of studying the three daily portions fixed for that day — those of the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*.

May Hashem grant that you have a year of success in the study of the Torah* and the practice of Mitzvos* in the best manner. With my blessing to study the Torah* with fear of Hashem,

You surely know of the three daily studies that pertain to each person and cover the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. You will adopt them henceforth. You also ask me for advice regarding the time you waste. You will therefore memorize the entire first paragraph of the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 1. From time to time, you will review it. Likewise, you will know by heart several chapters of Mishnah* and at least one of Tanya*. You will consult your spiritual guide for the choice of these chapters.

במענה על הודעתו אודות יום הולדת שלו,

בודאי נהג במנהג אנ"ש בזמן האחרון בנתינת צדקה ביום ההולדת לפני תפלת שחרית ומנחה או ביום שלפניו - כשחל יום ההולדת בש"ק או ביום טוב - לימוד שיעור נוסף הן בתורת הנגלה והן בתורת החסידות. עלי' לתורה ביום ההולדת או בשבת שלפניו ולימוד שלשת השיעורים הקבועים ליום זה - בחומש תהלים ותניא - ביום ההולדת.

ויה"ר מהשי"ת שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות בהידור.
