Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7320 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 291 · [fin d’Iyar 5720] · To: commencement

(end of Iyar* 5720)

Why (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Dov Ber Baumgarten and written on his own correspondence, dated 19 Kislev* 5720. He wrote: "We are currently studying the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*. Now, Rav Ch. Y. Lewin asks me why the beginning of chapter 5 cites the Midrash* according to which: 'At the outset, there arose in His Thought the idea of creating the world by the Attribute of Severity. But He saw that the world would not endure and He conjoined to it the Attribute of Mercy.' Now, it is explained above, in chapter 4, that it is, on the contrary, the Attribute of Kindness that appeared first. Moreover, this was even essential, and the Attribute of Severity was then only secondary, since it is said that, just as it is impossible to comprehend His Kindness and what flows from it, it is equally inconceivable to perceive His Severity. Furthermore, another Midrash* states the reverse and says that Hashem first wanted to create the world by the Attribute of Mercy. But He saw that it could not endure and He conjoined to it the Attribute of Severity. It is this latter Midrash* that seems more accurate") mention the Midrash* making reference to the Attribute of Severity?

The Righteous are in the image of their Creator and the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself acts in this manner, since it is said: "In the beginning, Elokim* (note 2: Divine Name that corresponds to the Attribute of Severity) created." This is also what the commentary of Rashi* states, in an allusive manner, by formulating the following proposition: "The world was created by the Hei*." You will also see the Zohar*, Volume 3, page 39a.

What is said in chapter 4.

It is not a question of the order of creation, but of that which manifests in the understanding of man. According to a rational analysis, it is clear that one cannot perceive the celestial emanation, since it is impossible to comprehend the process of the Tzimtzum*, the contraction of the Divine Light.

Note:

Perhaps they prophesy without being aware of it, for it is sometimes explained, as has just been said, that the beginning of the seven days of creation is the Attribute of Kindness. Indeed, the reason for this creation, as well as that of the Tzimtzum*, is the following: it is in the nature of the one who is good to do good. Furthermore, Hashem wants the creation to be at the measure of the creatures. It is for this reason that Hashem made the Tzimtzum*. Nevertheless, this concerns the cause of creation and not the manner of creating. This is quite evident.

Another Midrash* states the reverse.

This is not the case. There is a Midrash* that considers both possibilities, for example Bereishis* Rabbah, at the end of chapter 12: "If He had created it by the Attribute of Mercy... If He had created it by the Attribute of Severity..." On the other hand, the reverse does not exist.
