Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7321 — Chinuch
Volume 19 · Letter 292 · To: jeune ‘Haïm(1)
By the grace of Hashem,
1 Sivan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the young man Chaim (note 1: Rav Ch. Wolkin, of Baltimore. See, regarding him, letter no. 7429),
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of this Thursday, in which you ask me about the song Eimasai*, "When will the master come?" You ask me what its origin is. From what I know, this song comes from Yerushalayim* and its author has not been clearly identified. A few years ago, certain people fearing Hashem began to sing it with these words, due to the emotion that the melody aroused in them. Of course, this is not definitive, and if someone who knows how to sing, animated by the fear of Hashem, possessing sensitivity, found a more fitting song to motivate the soul and reflect upon the fact that: "When your wellsprings (note 2: Those of the Baal Shem Tov*, Chassidus*) will spread outward, the master (note 3: Moshiach*) will come," whoever so desires could adopt his view. On the other hand, if your question concerns the statement itself according to which: "When your wellsprings will spread outward, the master will come," such are indeed the very words of King Moshiach* himself, in the response he gave to the Baal Shem Tov* when the latter was in his sanctuary on high. The Baal Shem Tov* made this known in his holy epistle, which is printed in the book of one of his greatest disciples, the Ben Poras Yosef*, of Rabbi Yosef of Polnoa. A teaching cannot be stated in a clearer manner.
You tell me that you saw in a book that the study of Kabbalah*, of the inner dimension of the Torah*, will hasten the advent of the Messianic era and the coming of Moshiach*. Various books formulate an even clearer statement (note 4: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "For example, Rabbi Chaim Vital, in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamos*"), in wondrous and even frightening words, emphasizing that a deficiency in this study prolongs the exile of the children of Israel and that of the Divine Presence. There is no need to say more, so fearsome is this. I have good hope that you have a fixed time, which therefore cannot be annulled, for the study of this inner dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through the teaching of Chassidus*. And you will therefore consent to an addition in this regard, since the Injunction has been given to us to ascend in the domain of holiness. With my blessing to give good tidings,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
