Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7323 — Grief & Loss
Volume 19 · Letter 294 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
1 Sivan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments, the Rav Binyamin (note 1: Rav B. Mendelssohn. See, regarding him, letter no. 1693),
I greet you and bless you,
Everything is an effect of Divine Providence and, as our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, says, according to what we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, what a Jew sees or hears delivers to him a teaching for the service of Hashem. I therefore consider that you wrote to me in order to remind me of what is my duty, in accordance with the statement of our Sages* according to which: "One counsels eagerness to those who already possess this quality" — in this case, that of reminding you of the importance of the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov*, of his customs and his practices. For this year is particular, since it marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov* and this date occurs on the same day of the week (note 2: As his passing), a Wednesday, during the festival of Shavuos*. As the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the inner part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*, says, it is then that "the luminaries were removed" and that "the luminaries were suspended." This moment is therefore propitious to remind every Jew that on the day of this Hilloula*, before and after it, one must study his teaching, which he disseminated with the greatest self-sacrifice. As our Sages* emphasize, such study must, furthermore, lead to action, to his customs and his practices, to a Chassidic* life lived on a daily basis. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more and, indeed, all of this is written solely to counsel eagerness to one who already possesses this quality.
I know the influence that you exercise within your community and in various places of the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. I therefore have good hope that you will use it, to the fullest extent possible and even beyond, for the Torah* directs reality and transforms it, to the point that the holy Ark, placed in its location (note 3: In the Holy of Holies of the Beis HaMikdash*), occupied no space there, although it had a length of two and a half cubits. Now, it is certain that an effort never remains in vain, especially when it is accompanied by words emanating from the heart. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings of all this and, since one is obligated to express oneself in the manner of one's master — my father-in-law, the Rebbe — to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,
