To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Shalom (note 1: Rav Sh. Rivkin, of Seattle. See, regarding him, letter no. 7032),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Iyar*, in which you ask me about the placement of a Mezuzah*. In this matter, the Chabad* Chassidim* hold a tradition, which is a teaching of our masters and leaders, it seems to me since the Alter Rebbe*. According to this tradition, one relies on the direction in which the hinges open (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 6678), including in the case you cite, that of a balcony into which one can only enter through a room of the house. If one asks how one would enter it otherwise, the answer is that one would climb via the roof. And Rav Landa, of Bnei Brak, received, it seems to me, a definitive instruction in this regard from the Rebbe Rashab*. Moreover, in the balcony of the home of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the hinge opened toward the interior of the room and the Mezuzah* was affixed accordingly, in the manner that has just been defined.

As is customary, you tell me nothing about the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) in your city. May Hashem grant that you abolish this established practice and, above all, that you assume such dissemination, that you do so until it reaches the outside. Indeed, this year demands, requires increased action in this matter, since it marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. This is quite evident. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,

מסורה בפי חסידי חב"ד הוראה מרבותינו נשיאינו כמדומה לי עד לרבנו הזקן, שהולכים אחרי היכר ציר ואפילו בנדון כאותו שמתאר יציע (באלקאן) שהכניסה אליו רק דרך אחד מחדרי הבית, ואומרים בזה שעל השאלה איך יכנס, ענו, שיטפס דרך הגג, והרב לנדא שי' דבני ברק, כמדומה שמע בזה הוראה מפורשת מכ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע.

דא"ג גם בהבאלקאן בדירתו של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר היכר ציר לפנים החדר וקביעות מזוזה באופן הנ"ל.

כדרכו אינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד הפצת המעינות במחנו ויהי רצון שיבטל החזקה האמורה, והעיקר שיפיץ ויפיץ ועד שיגיעו גם חוצה, והרי השנה דורשת ותובעת תוספת פעולה בהאמור שהרי היא שנת המאתים להסתלקות הילולא של הבעש"ט ז"ל, וק"ל.
