By the grace of Hashem,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Shneur Zalman (note 1: Rav Sh. Z. Garelik, Rav of Kfar Chabad*. See, regarding him, letter no. 6870),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of Isru Chag* (note 2: The day after) Shavuos*, time of the giving of our Torah*, regarding your birthday. As the Psalm* whose reading you are about to begin says, in accordance with the custom of the early generations, may Hashem grant that the words of the verse be fulfilled in you: "Open your mouth and I will fill it" — in your personal concerns and in the communal achievements of all the Chassidim* that go hand in hand. Moreover, Divine Providence has granted you the merit and the success of exercising your influence as Rav and master of the place, in Kfar Chabad*, founded and directed by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, leader of Israel. You will therefore do so with joy and enthusiasm. As the verse says (note 3: The last verse of Psalm* 81. Rav Garelik was entering his eighty-first year): "He fed him with fat wheat, and I will satisfy you with honey from the rock." The wheat alludes to the revealed part of the Torah* and therefore to the revealed part of the world, while the honey corresponds to its inner teaching and, consequently, to the inner part of the world. You will give me good tidings of all this and, as I specified, you will do so precisely with joy.

You surely received my telegram regarding the constructions and the eagerness one must demonstrate in this matter. This must be, according to the expression of the Alter Rebbe* in Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 21, "solely (note 4: 'Ach,' a term whose numerical value is twenty-one) good," with an "extraordinary eagerness." Being the master of the place, you must exercise your authority in this matter as well. No doubt you will do so in the fitting manner, in order to accomplish the will of our masters — that of building edifices, materially and spiritually. With my blessing for a year of success in all that has just been said and to give good tidings thereof,

P.S.: You were asked why the Sages* of the Mishnah* and the Gemara* did not all bear the names of the Patriarchs and of Moshe* our master. Several works address this question — in particular the Maarechet Gedolim of the Chida*, under the entries "Rav Avraham Gaon" and "Rav Moshe Gaon." The sending of this letter was delayed, and in the meantime, I received your letter that followed the one to which this letter responds. You will find herein the answer to practically everything you ask me. You also ask me about a letter of recommendation for Kfar Chabad* (note 5: Rav Garelik was wondering whether he should draft it), intended to solicit donors. I am surprised by your doubt in this matter, for it is absolutely certain that such a recommendation is necessary. And may Hashem grant that there be many (note 6: Villages like Kfar Chabad*) in Eretz Yisrael*, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days.

יהי רצון שכאמור בהקאפיטל תהלים שמתאים למנהג קדמונים יתחיל לאומרו, יקוים בו בפועל הכתוב הרחב פיך ואמלאהו, בענינים הפרטים ובענינים הכללים אשר בכל אנ"ש יחדיו יהלכו ובפרט לזה שהשגחה עליונה זיכתו והצליחתו להיות משפיע כרב ומרא דאתרא בכפר חב"ד מיסודו ובהנהלתו של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע נשיא ישראל, ויעשה זה מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב, ובלשון הכתוב שם ויאכילהו מחלב חטה ומצור דבש (חטה גליא דתורה ובמילא גליא דעולם, דבש, סתים דתורה ופנימיות דעולם) אשביעך. ויבשר טוב בכל האמור וכנ"ל דוקא מתוך שמחה.

בודאי נתקבל המברק שלי בהנוגע להבנינים והזריזות שבדבר, ובלשון רבנו הזקן באגה"ק סי' א"ך טוב, זריזות נפלאה, והרי בתור מרא דאתרא גם בזה מרות שלו ובודאי ינצלו ככל הדרוש למילוי רצון רבותינו נשיאינו, לבנות בתים בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.

בברכה לשנת הצלחה בכל האמור ולבשו"ט בכל הנ"ל.

במה ששאלוהו שלא מצינו בין שמות התנאים ואמוראים וכו' שמות כל האבות ומשה רבנו וכו' - כבר העירו בזה באיזהו מקומן וביניהם החיד"א (מערכת גדולים ערך רב אברהם גאון ושם ערך רב משה גאון).

נתעכב השילוח ובנתים נתקבל מכתבו שלאחרי הנ"ל, וברובו כבר נענה בהנ"ל.

ובשאלתו ע"ד מכ' המלצה בנוגע לכחב"ד לעורר נדיבים, צ"ע הספק, כי בודאי ובודאי שיש להמליץ עליו וכו' והלואי וירבו כמותו בארץ ישראל ת"ו ע"י משיח צדקנו ב"ב.
