To the young man Avraham Moshe (note 1: Rav A. M. Greenberg, of Bnei Brak. See, regarding him, letter no. 6995),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Tammuz*, in which you ask me about chapter 29 of the Tanya*, according to which there can exist a Teshuvah* that is not yet accepted, whereas according to chapter 11 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, "there is no doubt, not a shadow of a doubt in the world, that Hashem, blessed be He, multiplies forgiveness." In fact, there is no contradiction here. Indeed, the conclusion of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* is that a precondition must be satisfied before asking: "Forgive us" (note 2: In the Amidah*). One must first say (note 2): "Allow us to return to You, through a wholehearted Teshuvah*," and this depends on the person. I mean that at that precise moment, one must make the decision to no longer "return to his folly..." (note 3: "To rebel against the Word of the King"). It is only to this extent that his Teshuvah* is complete. Now, there is no doubt that this will indeed be so and "Hashem, blessed be He, multiplies forgiveness."

Based on the formulation of your letter, I wish to hope that you have a fixed time for the study of Chassidus* and that it is more substantial during the holy Shabbos*, in accordance with the writings of the Arizal*. Furthermore, this year is the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, a propitious year for the dissemination of his wellsprings, which are the teaching of Chassidus*, until they reach the outside. במענה למכתבו מכ"ג תמוז, בו שואל בהכתוב בתניא פרק כ"ט שאפשר לתשובה שעדיין לא נתקבלה ובאגה"ת פרק י"א שבלי שום ספק וס"ס בעולם השי"ת רב לסלוח.

ואין בזה סתירה, שהרי באגה"ת שם מסיים, שתנאי ישנו שקודם לבקשת סלח לנו מקדימים לבקש והחזירנו בתשובה שלימה לפניך, אלא שכיון שזהו ביד האדם, כוונתי באותה שעה להחליט שלא ישוב עוד לכסלה וכו' שזהו תנאי שלימות התשובה, הרי אין שום ספק כלל שיעשה ככה, השי"ת רב לסלוח.
