I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Tammuz*, which has just reached me, in which you briefly describe what your life has been. You conclude by telling me that ultimately, you are advancing on the royal path, that of the King of the world, in accordance with the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." Recently, a match was proposed to you and you tell me how your parents view this proposal, since the young woman belongs to the community of our brethren, the Sephardi* Jews, originating from Morocco. You ask me what I think. According to what you write, she fears Hashem and she conducts herself as a Jewish daughter, who is a descendant of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah. It is about this that it is said: "The woman who fears Hashem is worthy of praise," and you should therefore pursue this proposal. You will conclude it at a good and fruitful time. It is quite clear that any reservation in this matter is unwarranted, that no barrier should be erected between Ashkenazim* and Sephardim*, which would be unthinkable. Moreover, in these very recent years, unions between them have been very numerous. Homes have been built, based on the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, that are happy, materially and spiritually.

In everything, the blessing and the help of Hashem are necessary, particularly in so fundamental a domain. You will therefore redouble your drive and ardor in the study of the Torah*. You will also establish a fixed time for the study of its inner dimension, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. Moreover, this year marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*. It is therefore propitious for disseminating his wellsprings, the teaching of Chassidus*. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked. Likewise, each weekday, before the morning prayer, you will set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

במענה למכתבו מט"ז תמוז - שהגיעני ז"ע - בו כותב ר"פ מדברי ימי חייו, ומסיים אשר סו"ס הולך בדרך המלך מלכו של עולם ע"פ ההוראה בתורתנו תורת חיים וקיום מצותי' עליהם נאמר וחי בהם, ושלאחרונה הציעו לו נכבדות ויחס ההורים להצעה זו מפני היות המדוברת מאחב"י הספרדים דמרוקה, ושואל דעתי בזה.

וכיון שככתבו, יראת ה' היא ומתנהגת כראוי לבת ישראל שכל אחת מהן נקראת בת שרה רבקה רחל ולאה, כבר נאמר על זה, אשה יראת ה' היא תתהלל, ויתענין בהצעה זו עד לגמרה בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ומובן וגם פשוט שאין כל מקום להסתייגות ולהעמיד מחיצה ח"ו בין האשכנזים והספרדים, ובפרט בשנים הכי אחרונות שהרבה והרבה השתדכו ביניהם ובונים ביתם על יסודי התורה והמצוה מאושרים בגשמיות וברוחניות.

וכיון שלכל דבר וענין זקוקים לברכת השי"ת וסייעתא דשמיא ובפרט בענין יסודי כהאמור, הנה יוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה בלימוד התורה ובזה גם קביעות בלימוד בפנימיות התורה אשר בדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, ובפרט אשר השנה היא שנת המאתים להסתלקות הילולא של מורנו הבעל שם טוב ז"ל, שנת סגולה להפצת מעינותיו היא היא תורת החסידות.

מהנכון אשר יבדקו את התפילין שלו וכן אשר בכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבקר יפריש פרוטות אחדות לצדקה.
