Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7432 — Chinuch
Volume 19 · Letter 405 · To: bout du compte
By the grace of Hashem,
21 Elul* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 16 Elul*, in which you speak to me about your daughter, who received her education in a certain family. Now, her teachers ask you for a clear answer (note 1: Should she be told who her true parents are?) and they formulate two proposals (note 2: To tell her who they are or not). In my opinion, your daughter being sixteen years old, as you write, it is indeed appropriate to find the opportune moment to tell her the truth. Indeed, it is almost certain that ultimately, she will know. It is therefore preferable that she learn it from those who are closest to her, at the appropriate time and with suitable words. Ultimately, the essential thing is the well-being of your daughter. It is therefore clear that one must ensure that she evolves in a religious environment and that she is placed under a religious influence, to the greatest extent possible. It is important, good, and perhaps even indispensable that this be so as soon as possible, at this transitional age.
You fear that your daughter will remain indifferent to an account given to her by surprise. One must therefore introduce these words in an appropriate manner. Furthermore, and this is essential, there is every reason to think that she will learn it on her own, as I said. It is therefore preferable that it come from you, especially since such cases are not rare, even if, of course, those who are concerned do not publicize it. How to envision all of this concretely? It depends on various points and on the character traits of those involved. You will therefore consult friends who are on the spot, and Hashem, Who bestows His Providence upon all, will guide each of you toward the true good. It is evident that an addition to the Torah* and to the Mitzvos* broadens the blessing of Hashem, especially when one needs it to be increased. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, as well as the Mezuzos* of your apartment, so that they are kosher*, according to the Halachah*.
You ask me for a blessing and, if you write me the names of these persons, with that of their mother, since this is how one cites someone in a prayer, they will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe* Shlita,
the secretary,
