Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7434 — Tzedakah

Volume 19 · Letter 407

By the grace of Hashem,

22 Elul* 5720,

Brooklyn,

To my close relative, the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Shmuel Menachem Mendel (note 1: Rav Sh. M. M. Schneerson, of Jerusalem. See, regarding him, letter no. 6739),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letters of 29 Menachem Av* and 3 Elul*, in which you describe to me what is happening among the Chassidim*, in the holy city of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt. It seems that, inasmuch as you write these reports after the fact, several elements are missing, including among the most important. No doubt you will remedy all of this in the future. Indeed, it is possible to note the main points and some references right away, and then to elaborate when one has the leisure. This is self-evident.

In this regard, you refer, in your letter of 29 Menachem Av*, to what was said here at the Chassidic* gathering, namely that the revelation at the Giving of the Torah* would have been merely an addition (note 2: To the reality of the world, not an event occurring within it). It is clear that such an interpretation is entirely excluded, for the Giving of the Torah* indeed corresponded to the entire chain of worlds. It is unnecessary to specify this, so evident is it. Here, in fact, is what was then said. The presence of ten people constitutes a public event, filling this world, which alludes to width, that is, to the surface, but not to depth and height. The revelation then emanates from a particularly elevated level. In this matter, there exist several levels, some being much higher than this number of ten. It is clear that there exist an infinite number of them, in height and in depth. And it is the deep dimension that is revealed by the presence of six hundred thousand people, which allows one to recite the blessing: "the Sage who perceives the secrets," revealing a similar level. Now, the same applies to the Giving of the Torah*. It seems that several ideas like this one are noted (note 3: From the Rebbe's talks, which are transcribed inaccurately). I am surprised that the readers do not notice this, which denotes a total absence of attention. This is self-evident. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

M. Schneerson,

I am responding to your question. It is good that you have registered to reside in the Chabad* quarter of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt. Of course, you will maintain this registration and bring it to its conclusion. Regarding the housing for which it is appropriate to opt, you will consult your friends who are on the spot and you will make a decision with your wife. In this way, you will know success.
