Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7436 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 409

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Elul* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 13/9, in which you briefly describe your life and inform me of your recent decision to continue your studies for one year at the Yeshivah*. Then, you tell me that you were seized by doubt: how will you earn your livelihood and what will you do upon leaving the Yeshivah*?

Your letter does not clearly specify whether you are troubled by the thought that the few months spent at the Yeshivah* could jeopardize your way of earning a livelihood. Now, one can hope, on the contrary, that after having tasted the study of our Torah*, Torah* of life, without being disturbed by other studies, you will perceive its positive aspect, the true good, not only for the World to Come, but also for this world. In fact, one can concretely observe that the most essential point, upon which the happiness of a person depends, is the fact of not feeling alone in life — oneself being on one side, while the world and one's surroundings are on the other. To exclude this eventuality for those who take stock of their world, one must be animated by faith in the Creator of the world, Who directs it and bestows upon it His Providence, even now, and, in the expression of our Sages*, "concretely, here below." If, at all times, this element has been essential for finding peace of mind, how much more so in our era, after the persecutions and the pogroms. Our hold on life and our endurance depend on a pure faith, a strong faith. Now, it is clear that you will not strengthen it by learning a trade, a profession, or even the sciences. On the contrary, scientific activity, in our era, leads to questioning the foundations. This is especially true for the sciences that are defined as exact. We will not demonstrate this here and will only emphasize that the primary condition for earning one's livelihood in the proper manner is peace of mind, the ability to concentrate on ensuring one's own subsistence. Moreover, regarding an intellectual, it is said: "by multiplying his knowledge, he increases his pain" when he observes his surroundings. You must therefore strengthen your worldview, reinforce it more and more. For this, you must devote time and find yourself in surroundings imbued with the perspective of our Torah*, Torah* of life, within which it is studied deeply and, as I said, without being distracted by other studies. After having built, in this way, a solid and powerful foundation, you will construct upon it the edifice that will be your way of earning a livelihood. In other words, the months and the years that you will devote exclusively to the study of the Torah* will be the basis of the way you will earn your livelihood thereafter.

You ask me how you will ensure your subsistence thereafter. Now, at your age, your areas of interest, regarding your work, can still evolve, especially if you spend some time in the manner just described. There is therefore no reason to decide now what you will do later. You will do so when the time comes, that is, when it will be necessary to take a concrete interest in it. It follows from all of this that you must continue your studies in a Yeshivah* where you will devote yourself exclusively to our holy Torah*, for a certain period. The longer it is, the more you will strengthen the foundation of your life. Thereafter, or at the end of this period, you will take an interest in your way of earning a livelihood. May Hashem, Who bestows His Providence upon each person, guide you toward what will be truly good for you. With my blessing to give good tidings, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

For the Rebbe* Shlita,

the secretary,

P.S.: I hope that you have a fixed time for the study of the deep dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*, which instills an increased enthusiasm in the life of a Jew in this world, a vitality emanating from good and purity, despite the undesirable winds blowing in the streets. This is self-evident. It would be good for you to study this teaching every day. Furthermore, it should be increased on Shabbos*, which is holy to Hashem.
