Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7438 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 411 · To: Etats-Unis

By the grace of Hashem,

Days of Selichos* 5720,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of Mr. Eliezer Aryeh HaLevi, who is called Professor Finkelstein (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 6529),

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter in its time. Due to my many activities, I did not respond to it in writing, but, of course, I am informed of the developments and the changes of the institution that you direct and, above all, of the state of mind of its students. This leads me to emphasize to you once again the following point, which we have discussed on various occasions and which I have also, it seems to me, mentioned in a letter I addressed to you. Subject to verification, there has never been a moment as propitious as the present hour to lead the youth, the young people, to submit to the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, in the most literal sense, that is, to the practice of these Mitzvos*, daily, to their concrete fulfillment. Every moment, every opportunity, every occasion that is not used in the proper manner is an irremediable loss. Of course, I do not mean that by moralizing, by pronouncing such words, one will immediately transform those who hear them, so that they will observe the entire Torah* and its six hundred and thirteen Mitzvos*. But it is certain, as practice has proven, that not only will these words have a theoretical effect, but furthermore, they will prepare minds for an effective change and, as I said, will lead to the practice of the Mitzvos*. Now, it is indeed the act that is essential.

It is painful to observe that precisely the leaders, the spiritual guides, naturally older than those who listen to them, than the students — those whose moral personality was formed twenty or thirty years ago — are still animated by a fear that was current at that time, that they have adopted the saying: "by wanting to do too much, one accomplishes nothing," that they take a hair's breadth for a mountain, for an immense result. And it is difficult to convince them, for they have an argument linked to the fear of Hashem: if they address the young people and those who listen to them in the manner defined at the beginning of my letter, they might frighten them, lose all contact with them! And who knows where this fall will lead them? I write all this clearly because, from what is said, you yourself do not feel such a fear. But in any case, I am certain that you do not fully use your capacity to exercise an influence, in the manner just described, perhaps due to the opposition expressed by those of middle age to whom I previously alluded. Now, you will excuse me for saying that this fear is unfounded, for without a doubt, those who will listen to you, the students, will be on your side. In the United States in particular, the parents follow the children and the teachers defer to the students.

In fact, this is indeed one of the signs of the period of the heel of Moshiach* (note 2: In immediate proximity to his coming), of the last generation of the exile, just before the beginning of the redemption. In accordance with the promise of the prophet: "He will turn the heart of the fathers through the sons," and Rashi* explains: "through the intermediary of the sons." It would seem that this is the opposite of the blessing, as the Tosefta* indicates at the end of tractate Sotah*: "the young people will make the elders pale, the son will revile his father." Nevertheless, we are commanded to transform darkness into light and bitterness into sweetness. You emphasize to me the importance of study and of thorough analysis. The Halachah* indeed rules that study is great, but it immediately states the reason: because it leads to action. Moreover, for study to be fruitful and engraved in the mind, it must not contradict, at least not in an obvious manner, the daily existence of those who devote themselves to it, the teacher and the student. Furthermore, according to the analysis of the character traits of man, as established by Chassidus*, one prepares one's mind to integrate the words of our Torah*, which is holy and which is also a Torah* of life, by having a daily existence in conformity with its teachings. In this sense, there is a fundamental difference between our Torah*, although it is defined as "your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the nations," and the other sciences, the disciplines of knowledge. When one studies a science, even an ethical one, the fact of adopting a behavior totally contrary to its conclusions does not prevent one from understanding it. This is not the case, however, for the wisdom of the Torah*, not only its moral dimension, but also, for example, the laws of impurity and purity, as a brief saying of our Sages* emphasizes: "Hashem is with him and the Halachah* is always ruled according to his opinion." Indeed, it is only when "Hashem is with him" that one can determine the Halachah*, or, in the formulation of the Mishnah*, when "the fear of Hashem precedes the wisdom."

All that has just been said is based on the conception set forth in your letter, showing the necessity of study as a first step. On the other hand, according to my own perspective, the value of action must be emphasized in any case, for it is through its intermediary that one can influence the young people, in an immediate and lasting manner, and lead them thereafter to ardor in study. You surely know that this year marks the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. On this occasion, we have published a book called: "Baal Shem Tov*." It has been sent to you by separate mailing. I do not know what your relationship with Chassidus* is, but I am sure that this work will arouse your interest. Perhaps it will clarify and strengthen what is said above. With my respects, my blessing to give good tidings and my wishes that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,
