You write to me the reason for which you interrupted your study of the Tanya*. It is clear that this is particularly surprising. Indeed, regarding all parts of the Torah*, it is said: "One who claims not to have made an effort and to have nevertheless known success — do not believe him." What is surprising about the same being true for this study? You write to me that you understood nothing of it. There is a great exaggeration in this. In fact, as is the case with many people, you surely approached this study in a reverse order. In your case, indeed, it is appropriate to first study Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, then the second part of the Tanya* and finally the first. This is, at the very least, what you will do in the future. More precisely, after Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, you will study the Kuntres U'Maayan*. With the proper effort, you will understand it, even if you study it alone. You will be able to obtain the text in Lod, or from the young people of the Chabad* association. Obviously, when one studies a text for the first time, one does not analyze each word of it. In a first stage, one considers the idea in its entirety. It is only afterward that one conducts a finer analysis, as one does for the Gemara*. May Hashem grant that you practice in this manner. And Hashem will grant you success.

... לכתבו במכתבו הסיבה שהפסיק לימוד התניא מובן שתמוה ביותר וביותר, שהרי בהנוגע לכל חלקי תורתנו נאמר לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, ומה פלא אם לימוד הנ"ל בכלל זה, ולכתבו שלא הבין אף דבר, גוזמא גדולה בזה, אלא שכרגיל אצל רבים, בטח התחיל ללמוד בסדר הפוך [כי בסוג שלו לימוד האמור צריך להתחילו בחלק של אגרת התשובה ואחר כך חלק ב דתניא ואחר כך חלק ראשון], ועכ"פ יעשה זה כנ"ל עתה, או מתאים יותר שלאחרי שילמוד אגרת התשובה ילמוד קונטרס ומעין, ובהשתדלות יבינהו גם כשילמוד בעצמו, וישיגו אם בלוד או אצל צעירי אגודת חב"ד, אלא שמובן וגם פשוט שבפעם הראשונה שלומדים אין מדייקים על כל תיבה כ"א תופסים כללות הענין ואח"כ לדייק יותר ועל דרך לימוד הגמרא, ויהי רצון שיעשה כהאמור, והשי"ת יצליחו.
