By the grace of Hashem,

To Mr. Yosef Dekel (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 7170),

I greet you and bless you,

I was pleased to receive your greetings, through the intermediary of Mr. Landau. I also duly received the two volumes of your book Yizkor U'Gevilei Eish (note 2: "Memorial Prayer and Parchments of Fire," dealing with the Shoah). I thank you for this attention and, if you publish other works, I hope you will send them to the library located here, especially since it serves the greatest number. But may Hashem grant that the content of your next books be linked to joyous events, that there be much good and joy, as the verse promises (Yeshayahu 12:1): "I thank You, Hashem, for You have chastised me. When Your anger subsides, You will console me," which indeed means that this consolation will be such that one will be able to praise Hashem with all one's heart, including in noting that: "You have chastised me."

On this occasion, it is surely unnecessary to remind you that the remembrance must always influence concrete action, which is essential. The purpose of such a remembrance is therefore to perpetuate the values of our people, whose eternity is linked to our eternal Torah* and its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." These were given by Hashem and it is said: "You are the Same and Your years have no end." He is also the Creator of man, Who made him, the Creator of the world, down to its smallest aspect. He is therefore the only One to know the ways and the conduct of man, individually and as a community. He alone can ensure the existence of man, the conditions of life that suit him. The Jews bear a collective responsibility. Each one must therefore use his abilities and his means to strengthen and perpetuate our people, the children of Israel, by disseminating the immutable values of our eternal Torah*, in the widest circles, in a constantly increasing manner. How much greater are the merit, the responsibility and the duty of those who exercise an influence upon the most extensive circles, through speech, through writings and especially through publications. The assurance has been given to us that one comes to the aid of the one who desires to purify himself.

May Hashem grant that you accomplish all of this, with joy and enthusiasm. On the occasion of the new year which approaches, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I address my wishes to you and your family, for a good and sweet year. With my respects and my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

נעם לי לקבל פ"ש מכ' על ידי מר לאנדא שי' והנני מאשר בזה גם קבלת ספר יזכור ו גוילי אש, ב' חלקים. ות"ח בעד שימת לבבו, ותקותי שאם הוציא לאור עוד פרסומים ישלחם לספרי' כאן, ובפרט שהספרי' היא לתועלת הרבים. אבל יהי רצון שתוכן הפרסומים הבאים יהי' קשור במאורעות שמחים ולזכרון מאורעות שמחים, ויהי' רבוי הטוב והשמחה כיעוד הכתוב אודך ה' כי אנפת בי (כי) ישוב אפך ותנחמני (ישעי' יב, א), זאת אומרת, שהנחמה תהי' במדה כזו שההודי' תהי' בכל לב גם ע"ז ש"אנפת בי".

בטח למותר להדגיש, בהזדמנות זו, שענין כל זכרון הוא להשפיע במעשים, שהרי מעשה עיקר, ותכלית הכוונה של זכרון הנ"ל הוא להנציח ערכי עמנו אשר נצחיותו קשורה בתורתנו הנצחית ומצוותי' עליהן נאמר וחי בהם, שניתנו מה' שהוא "אתה הוא ושנותיך לא יתמו", וביחד עם זה הוא בורא האדם ויוצרו ובורא העולם על כל פרטיו, ולכן הוא היחידי שיוכל לדעת הדרכים והאופנים כיצד האדם בתור יחיד ובתור צבור יוכל להבטיח קיומו ותנאי חייו המתאימים לו. וכיון שישראל ערבים זה בזה, על כל אחד ואחד לנצל כל יכלתו ואפשריותו להוסיף בביסוס וקיום עמנו בני ישראל על ידי הפצת הערכים הנצחיים של תורתנו הנצחית בחוגים הכי רחבים ובאופן דמוסיף והולך.

ועל אחת כמה וכמה שגדול הזכות והאחריות והחוב בזה של כל אלו שיש להם השפעה בחוגים רחבים, אם בדבור, אם בכתב ובפרט על ידי עניני דפוס. והובטחנו הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו.

ויהי רצון שכ' יעשה בזה מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני שולח לו ולכל אשר לו איחולי לשנה טובה ומתוקה.
