By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of the first day of Selichos* (note 1: The 26th of Elul), in which you inform me of your desire to attain Teshuvah*. You ask me how to accomplish this concretely, when various events create obstacles.

You must meditate precisely on what the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*, writes at the beginning of chapter 41 of his holy Tanya*. It would be good for you to learn this text by heart, from the beginning of this chapter to the following page, up to the expression "of the King." As is known, our Sages* affirm: "May Hashem grant that you fear Him as you fear men," and you will consult the Tanya*, page 57a. You will also reflect on the content of these days, which you will discover, in particular, in Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*. I hope that you will make the decision, with the proper determination, to return to Hashem our Elokim*, within all of Israel. Moreover, in this period, the blessing for the entire year is obtained and, to the one who desires to purify himself, aid is given even more clearly. I enclose my letter addressed to all, on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah* (note 2: This is letter no. 7441), which deals with the same subject, although it does not address this aspect precisely.

At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that you obtain the satisfaction of your needs. With my blessing that you be definitively sealed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו מיום הראשון דסליחות, בו כותב אודות הרצון לעשות תשובה, ואיך להביא לפועל, והרי כמה ענינים ישנם שמבלבלים.

ויתבונן היטב הדק היטב במ"ש רבנו הזקן [בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר

דתורה - והשו"ע - פוסק בנגלה דתורה] - בספרו תניא קדישא ריש פרק מא, ומה טוב שילמוד בעל פה מהתחלת הפרק עד לעמוד שני, תיבת המלך, וידוע דרז"ל הלואי שיהי' מורא שמים עליכם כמורא בשר ודם (שם בתניא דף נ"ז ע"א). כן יתבונן מענינא דימים אלו שילמדם באגרת התשובה לרבנו הזקן ועוד, ותקותי שיחליט בתוקף שעליו בתוככי כלל ישראל לשוב אל ה' אלקינו, ובפרט בימים אלו שההמשכה היא על כל השנה כולה הנה הרוצה לטהר מסייעין לו ביותר, ומוסגר בזה מכתבי כללי לראש השנה שגם בו מדובר בענין האמור אף שלא בנקודה זו.

בעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע להמצטרך לו.
