To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of good conduct, filled with zeal, of multiple accomplishments, the Rav Yitzchak, called Dr. Lewin (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 7653),

I greet you and bless you,

I received, on occasion, your book entitled: "Late Summer Fruit" (note 2: In English in the original text). I thank you for it and, without doubt, you will also send me your other publications, which are not in my library. I thank you. I deemed it appropriate to express here the following idea, which I have had for some time already, and I am regularly astonished and surprised that it has not been acted upon. A history of persecutions and pogroms should be written, one that would be faithful to reality and would also be intended for those who fear the Word of Hashem.

Several works have been published in recent years, describing various periods of persecutions and pogroms, but their number remains very small and a child could count them, or else they conceal the part concerning those who fear Hashem and their institutions. In any case, the share devoted to them is very minimal compared to what would be necessary, or worse still, the facts are falsified. Among these few publications, it is clear that the anthologies entitled "Those Whose Memory Must Be Preserved" occupy a predominant place, but to someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to emphasize that this is in no way sufficient, especially in comparison with what is published by the other camp, which presents a falsified account of the facts.

I wished to write all of this to you specifically when I consulted your book, which I have just received, in which there are articles that indeed fall into this category. It seems to me that some years ago, there was an exchange on this subject in the Orthodox press. I also discussed it with people from Eretz Yisrael* who came here on a visit. But for the moment, I have not seen the fruits of all this, or in any case, I have not been informed of them. Now, human nature dictates that certain points are forgotten, sometimes even among the most important. Much more, in our era, new facts and problems arise each day, attracting attention and demanding concentration, occupying free time, when one has any.

I would be pleased to learn that certain people are devoting themselves to the description of these periods and that this project is advancing at the appropriate pace. May Hashem grant that this situation be soon changed and that one can publish such a history book, with chapters filled with rejoicing content, with a visible and tangible good. שלום וברכה!

בהזדמנות קבלת ספרו Late Summer Fruit אשר תודתי נתונה על זה, ובטח שאר פרסומיו שאינם נמצאים בהספרי' שלי ישלח ג"כ, ות"ח מראש גם על זה.

מצאתי מקום להביע כאן רעיון, שזה מכבר עומד הנני עליו, ומזמן לזמן מתגברת הפליאה והתמי' על שאינו בא לפועל, והוא:

עריכת דברי ימי הגזירות וההשמדות מתאים להמציאות גם בהנוגע להיראים וחרדים לדבר ה',

אשר אף שכמה פרסומים הופיעו במשך שנים אלו, בם מתוארים תקופות שונות מימי הגזירות וההשמדות, הרי מלבד מספר הכי קטן, אשר נער יספרם, או שמעלימים בכלל חלק השייך ליראי ה' ומוסדות שלהם, או שעכ"פ מקציבים להם חלק קטן ביותר בערך הנדרש, או, מה שגרוע עוד יותר, מסלפים את הענינים.

והנה במספר הפרסומים בודדים הנ"ל, מובן שהקובצים דאלה אזכרה וכיו"ב בולטים, אבל בודאי לדכוותי' ההדגשה למותר, שאין זה מספיק כלל, ובפרט בהשוואה להפרסומים דהצד שכנגד, בם נרשמו הדברים באופן מסולף.

נתעוררתי ביחוד לכתוב זה לכ' בראותי גם בספרו שקבלתי ז"ע מאמרים שתוכנם במסגרת האמורה.

כמדומה שלפני איזה שנים היתה שקו"ט באיזה המכ"ע החרדים עד"ז, כן בשיחותי עם אנשי מערבא מארץ ישראל שבקרו כאן, נגעו ג"כ ברעיון האמור, אבל לע"ע לא נראו הפירות ועכ"פ לא נודע לי מהפירות, והרי כטבע בנ"א הולכים כמה פרטים ונשכחים, ואת"ל לא רק פרטים כ"א גם ענינים עיקרים, ובפרט שתקופתנו בכל יום מתחדשים דברים ובעיות התופסים שימת לב ודורשים עיון, וגוזלים עתות הפנויות אפילו כשישנם.

וינעם לי לדעת אשר ישנם מתעסקים ברשימת תקופה האמורה, ומתקדם המפעל בקצב הדרוש.

ויהי רצון שבקרוב ישתנה המצב שיוכלו להעלות על ספר דברי הימים, פרקים מלאים תוכן משמח, בטוב הנראה והנגלה.
