Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7503 — Tzedakah

By the grace of Hashem,

To the young man Chaim (note 1: Rav Ch. Wolkin, of Wickliffe. See, regarding him, letter no. 7321),

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I duly received your letter of this Thursday, in which you ask me what you should study during the twenty-four hours of the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, which is approaching — the Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways. In accordance with the content of this day, it is clear that this study must bear upon the teaching of the one whose joy and liberation we celebrate, that is, Chabad* Chassidus*. It may be his books — for example, the Tanya*, the Torah Or*, the Likkutei Torah* — or the commentaries that were provided on them in the Chassidic* discourses and talks of our masters and leaders, whose merit protects us.

As is the case for all parts of our Torah*, Torah* of life, great is the study that leads to action. It is therefore proper to follow the directives and customs of Chassidus* in this matter. It would be judicious and good, during these twenty-four hours, to endeavor to disseminate the wellsprings (note 2: Of Chassidus) outward. The fact of moving one's lips is indeed an action, but it remains limited and one must therefore not content oneself with it. One must seek an important action, a service rendered to Jews. Now, nothing can withstand the will (note 3: The one who wills it can therefore do it). May Hashem therefore grant that you give me good tidings of all this.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מיום החמישי, ולשאלתו מה ילמוד בהמעל"ע דיום הבהיר יום סגולה י"ט כסלו הבע"ל ראש השנה ללימוד החסידות ודרכי החסידות.

ע"פ תוכן יום זה מובן שהלימוד צ"ל בתורתו של בעל השמחה והגאולה, ז.א. תורת חסידות חב"ד, אם בספריו (כמו ספר התניא תורה אור ולקוטי תורה), או (ביחד עם הביאורים שנתוספו) במאמרים ושיחות של רבותינו נשיאינו זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

אלא שכיון שככל חלקי תורתנו תורת חיים, גדול תלמודה שמביא לידי מעשה צ"ל גם ההליכה בההדרכות וההנהגות של תורת החסידות.

ומהנכון וטוב ביותר שבמשך המעל"ע להשתדל להפיץ המעינות חוצה, שעקימת שפתיו הוה מעשה (זוטא) ולא להסתפק בזה כי אם גם שיהי' מעשה רבה, עשיית טובה לבני ישראל, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון. ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור.
