By the grace of Hashem,

To the students (note 1: This term is in the feminine) of the Chabad* school of Tzargona (note 2: Belonging to the Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch* network in the Holy Land), may Hashem grant you long life,

I bless you and greet you,

I duly received your letter of 17 Kislev* and may Hashem grant that you announce good tidings of its content. We are approaching the days of Chanukah* and, according to the text of the prayer Al HaNissim* (note 3: Inserted in the Amidah* and the Grace After Meals during this festival), the Holy One, blessed be He, then "placed the impure in the hands of the pure, the wicked in the hands of the righteous, the evil in the hands of those who devote themselves to Your Torah*."

So it is for every Jew and every Jewish woman, in every era and in every place. If one demonstrates self-sacrifice, in accordance with the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life, Hashem places the evil inclination — impure, wicked and evil — that is in the heart of man, into the hands of the good inclination — pure, righteous, thirsting for Torah* and Mitzvos*. Thereupon, each person can kindle "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," in one's own soul, in one's home and in one's surroundings. May Hashem grant that this be fulfilled in each one of you. With my blessing for a joyous Chanukah* and to give good tidings,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבן מי"ז כסלו, ויהי רצון שתבשרנה טוב בתוכנו.

והרי מתקרבים אנו לימי חנוכה, אשר כנוסח תפלת על הנסים, מסר הקב"ה טמאים ביד טהורים ורשעים ביד צדיקים, וזדים ביד עוסקי תורתך.

הנה כן הוא גם ביחס לכל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל בכל הזמנים ובכל המקומות, אשר באם כהוראת תורתנו תורת חיים עומדים במסירות נפש, מוסר הקב"ה את היצה"ר שבלב האדם שהוא טמא רשע זד ביד היצר הטוב הטהור צדיק ומשתוקק לתורה ומצות, ויכול כל אחד להדליק נר מצוה ותורה אור, בעצמו בנפש בביתו ובסביבתו.

ויהי רצון שיקוים כל האמור בכל אחת מהן.
