Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7513 — Faith & Bitachon

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter, which you transmitted to me through the intermediary of the Chassid*, Rav Sh. Ch. Kasselman (note 1: Rav Shlomo Chaim Kasselman, Mashpia* of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Lod). You speak of pure faith (note 2: The addressee of this letter, a Yeshivah student, questions himself about his difficulties in acquiring it). Our holy books, particularly those of Chassidus*, explain that it is complete in every Jew and every Jewish woman, each being defined as a son of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rochel and Leah. Nevertheless, it can happen that the evil inclination besieges the thought and deceives the person, by suggesting other thoughts to him, sometimes even opposite thoughts. In this matter, it is effective, as the holy Tanya* explains, to anger the animal soul by telling it: "You are evil, wicked, corrupt, repulsive, depraved," as specified in chapter 29 of the Tanya* and other texts, according to the references in the index at the end of the Tanya*.

There is also another way of acting, more favorable, and it seems to me that I have already written to you about this — it is to forget all of that entirely. When the evil inclination makes advances, one must respond to it that one has no time to devote to it, that one must study Torah*, fulfill a Mitzvah* or pray. Simultaneously, one will set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*, every weekday morning before the prayer. Furthermore, one will maintain the three well-known studies bearing upon the Chumash*, the Tehillim* and the Tanya*. Essential point: you will study the Torah* with enthusiasm and ardor, in accordance with the program of the Yeshivah*. Indeed, a little light suffices to repel much darkness (note 3: And how much more can much light do so). With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

ולכתבו אודות אמונה פשוטה.

מבואר בספרים הק' וביחוד בספרי חסידות, איך שנמצאת היא בשלימות אצל כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל, שכל אחד ואחת נקראים בן אברהם יצחק ויעקב ובת שרה רבקה רחל ולאה, אלא שלפעמים היצר הרע מטריד את כח המחשבה וגם מטעה את האדם לחשוב בענינים אחרים ולפעמים גם בענינים הפכים, ולזה מועיל כמבואר בספר תניא קדישא, לרגוז על נפש הבהמית וכו' אתה רע ורשע ומשוקץ ומתועב ומנוול וכו' (תניא פרק כ"ט ובשאר מקומות כמצוין במפתח הענינים, בסוף ספר התניא).

ועוד דרך בזה והיא מעולה יותר, וכמדומה שכבר כתבתי לו זה, היסח הדעת לגמרי, וכשבא היצר בפיתוייו, עונים לו, שאין עתה פנוי הוא לכך, כי צריך ללמוד וצריך לקיים מצוה ולהתפלל וכו' וביחד עם זה הפרשה לצדקה פרוטות אחדות בכל יום חול בבקר קודם התפלה ושמירת שלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, ועוד ועיקר התמדה ושקידה מתאים לסדרי הישיבה, והרי אפילו מעט אור דוחה אפילו הרבה חשך.
