To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Tzvi (note 1: Rav T. Freydin, of Tel Aviv. See, regarding him, letter no. 6833),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of this Thursday (note 2: The 19th of Kislev), date of the good tidings and the deliverance — that of the Alter Rebbe*, but also the date of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls — the festival of 19 Kislev*. You ask me about the expression: "He who learns from his master a single letter." What study is referred to here? At various references in the Talmud, one finds such questions and answers, for example in tractate Shabbos* 77a-b. Regarding the question, one can also cite tractate Shabbos* 104a, as well as tractate Kiddushin* 30a, which says: "Rav Yosef asked: this Vav..." or yet tractate Bava Metzia* 87a, which inquires about "a vegetable" or "and a vegetable" (note 3: The difference between the two formulations, "and" being a simple Vav).

There are many more examples. I am surprised that you say nothing to me of the actions you undertook during the month of Tishrei*, which has a general import extending over the entire year, as well as during the month of Kislev*, in order to strengthen Judaism in general and to disseminate the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus) in particular. In accordance with your request, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with the content of your letter. With my blessing to give good tidings and for a joyous Chanukah*,

במענה למכתבו מיום החמישי, יום הבשורה יום הגאולה, גאולת אדמו"ר הזקן וגאולתנו ופדות נפשנו הוא החג י"ט כסלו.

שואל לפירוש הענין דהלומד מרבו אפילו אות אחת, מהו ענין לימוד זה.

והנה בכמה מקומות בש"ס מצינו שאלות ומענות כהנ"ל, ולדוגמא, שבת ע"ז סוף ע"א וריש ע"ב, כן י"ל שהוא ע"ד השאלה, בשבת ק"ד ע"א, כן בקדושין ל' סוף ע"א, בעי רב יוסף וא"ו וכו', ב"מ פ"ז ע"א בסופו - קטנית או וקטנית וכמה כהנה.

לפלא שאינו מזכיר מפעולותיו בחדש תשרי חדש הכללי לכל השנה וכן בחדש כסלו, בעניני החזקת היהדות בכלל והפצת המעינות ביחוד.
