To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Asher (note 1: Rav A. Abramson, of Sydney, Australia. See, regarding him, letters no. 7362 and 7573),

I greet you and bless you,

You inquire (note 2: This question was formulated on letter no. 7540) about the date of your trip (note 3: To visit the Rebbe, traveling from Australia to the United States), at a good and fruitful time. I am not satisfied that one cross the International Date Line during the period of the Omer*, when there is no absolute necessity to do so. Indeed, in such a case, I consider very clearly (note 4: See, on this subject, letters no. 6415 and 7573) that one must celebrate Shavuos* on the fiftieth day of one's own count (note 5: Of the Omer*), but not that of the Jews who are in the place where one arrives. Those who see you do so will therefore be astonished.
