To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple accomplishments, the Rav Shmuel Abba (note 1: Rav S. A. Snieg, of Munich. See, regarding him, letter no. 7176),

I greet you and bless you,

After an interruption, I duly received your letter of 16 Teves*, in which you briefly describe the Chassidic* farbrengen* on the luminous day, the festival of liberation of 19 Kislev*, our deliverance and freedom of our souls, Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways. May Hashem grant that its trace be preserved throughout the year, even in daily existence.

You make reference to this school in which both sacred studies and secular sciences will be taught. In general, the formula to be retained depends on the conditions of the place and the persons concerned. In fact, one can, in this matter, distinguish two extreme situations. In some cases, our masters and leaders opposed this (note 2: The study of secular sciences) with the greatest energy. At other times, even if they did not personally found such schools, they nevertheless indirectly accorded their assistance. Naturally, this latter situation was particularly rare. Nevertheless, it did occur. In this case, it is therefore for you to analyze the local situation and to decide, accordingly, what should be done. Hashem has given the assurance that one comes to the aid of the one who desires to purify himself. He will therefore cause your decision to be the right one, for the merit of the greatest number.

I hope that preparations are being made for the Hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Israel (note 3: Celebrated on the 10th of Shevat*). May Hashem grant that until that date and still thereafter, each person strengthen his commitment in the domains for which the one whose Hilula* we celebrate gave of himself — the profound idea being the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus*) until they reach the outside. With my blessing to give good tidings of your communal accomplishments and your personal achievements, as well as greeting all the Chassidim*,

לאחרי הפסק נתקבל מכתבו מט"ז טבת, בו כותב ר"פ מההתועדות דיום הבהיר יום הגאולה י"ט כסלו, גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו ראש השנה ללימוד החסידות ולדרכי החסידות ויהי רצון שיהי' רישומה ניכר בכל ימות השנה ועד למעשה בחיי היום יומים.

לכתבו אודות בי"ס, בו ילמדו לימודי קדש וגם להבדיל לימודי חול.

בכלל בכגון דא תלוי בתנאי המקום והאישים ועד לשני הקצוות בזה: בתנאים מסוימים התנגדו רבותנו נשיאינו לזה בכל תוקף, ובתנאים מסוימים אחרים, אף שלא התעסקו ביסוד בי"ס אלו אבל מאחורי הפרגוד סייעו בדבר, ומובן שאופן האחרון הי' נדיר ביותר אבל בכ"ז קרה לפעמים. ועפי"ז על כת"ר לדון על אתר בהמצב ולהכריע.

ויה"ר מהשי"ת שהבטיח הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו שיחליט לאמיתתו של הענין ולזכות הרבים.

תקותי שמתכוננים ליום ההילולא של כ"ר מו"ח אדמו"ר נשיא ישראל, ויהי רצון שעד אז ואז ואחרי יום ההילולא יוסיף כאו"א בהענינים עליהם מסר נפשו בעל ההילולא ובנקודה הפנימית הפצת המעינות (ועד שיגיעו גם) חוצה.

בברכה לבשו"ט בעניני הכלל והפרט בפ"ש כל אנ"ש שי'.
