To Mr. Binyamin Lampert,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 10 Cheshvan*, as well as those that followed. You inform me of the initiative to establish a maritime company that would put into service ships connecting the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, to the United States, in a manner permitted by the Shulchan Aruch* (note 1: Without transgression of Shabbos*. See, on this subject, letter no. 7040). To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to explain to what extent this constitutes a great merit. I am, quite obviously, interested in such a project, with all my soul and all my heart, for it is a means of conferring merit upon the greatest number.

You envision that the crew of these ships be composed of non-Jews. This eventuality is not at all realistic, for various reasons, as I explained in a relatively detailed manner in my letter, a copy of which you will find enclosed. Moreover, according to this reasoning, it would be necessary to double the size of this crew. Another point, which is essential — it is concretely unavoidable that certain tasks and various actions be performed by Jews. This is quite evident. I was therefore reassured upon observing that, in your second letter, you envisioned solely that the ship be immobilized during Shabbos*.

You possess a good knowledge of the functioning of ships. You therefore surely know that after their docking, several tasks are still necessary until their total immobilization. Likewise, several preparations are indispensable before they set out to sea again. One must heat the engines and start them up, which requires a certain delay. It is therefore necessary to stop the ship some time before the onset of Shabbos*. Likewise, it must be established from the outset that the departure, at the conclusion of Shabbos*, take place a moment after the end of this day. It is also proper to obtain the assistance of those who are interested. Now, there exists, to my knowledge, an enterprise of Orthodox Jews that maintains commercial relations with maritime companies for the purpose of organizing trips and shipping merchandise in observance of Shabbos*. It would be good for you to contact them at the address indicated below. I myself have informed them of your initiative, so that if you write to them, they will not be discovering your project for the first time (note 2: But will have already been informed of it beforehand).

Given the importance of this project and its absolute necessity, Hashem will grant you success. The merit of what is public will come to your aid. Indeed, it is desirable that the situation become clearer and more defined (note 3: That it be known that there is, in this matter, a transgression of Shabbos*). And we will witness, very soon, the fulfillment of the promise according to which, if the Jews scrupulously observe one Shabbos*, they will immediately be redeemed. With my respects and my blessing,

שלום וברכה!

הנני מאשר קבלת מכתבו מי' חשון ושלאחריו, בו כותב ע"ד היזמה לארגן חברת ספנות שתפעיל אני' מאה"ק ת"ו לארה"ב שהנסיעה תהי' באופן המותר על פי השו"ע.

וגודל הזכות שבזה בודאי שלדכוותי' לא צריך אריכות ומובן שאני מעונין בזה בלב ונפש, שהרי זהו ענין לזכות הרבים.

והנה בנוגע הסברה שהאני' תופעל על ידי צוות של אינם-יהודים הרי זה ענין שלגמרי אינו מעשי מכמה טעמים, כפי שהארכתי קצת בזה במכתבי, שהעתקתו מצ"ב.

ובפרט אשר לפי סברה זו יהי' צריך לכפול את הצוות, ועוד וגם זה עיקר, אשר בפועל לא יימנע אשר כמה מלאכות ופעולות יהיו נעשים על ידי יהודים, וד"ל.

ולכן נחה דעתי בראותי אשר במכתבו השני מזכיר רק האפשריות שהאני' תעמוד בשבת.

כיון שכ' בקי במהלך האניות, בטח יודע שלאחרי שאני' מעגנת עוד יש לעשות כמה מלאכות עד כדי שביתה גמורה. ועל דרך זה ג"כ קודם שיוצאת לדרך יש לעשות כמה הכנות לחמם ולהפעיל את המכונות מה שדורש שעה מסויימת, מזה מובן שעמידת האני' צריכה להיות איזה זמן קודם כניסת השבת וכן צריך לקבוע מלכתחילה שיציאתה במוצאי שבת תהי' איזה זמן אחרי יציאת השבת.

בנוגע לגיוס עזר ממעונינים, הנה כפי שידוע לי יש חברת יהודים חרדים המנהלים מו"מ עם חברות ספנות לסדר נסיעות וכן משלוח מטען באופן של שמירת שבת, וכדאי שכ' יבוא בקישור עמהם עפ"י הכתובת בשולי המכתב. ומצדי ג"כ הודעתי להם ע"ד יזמת כ' באופן שאם יכתוב להם לא יהי' אצלם חידוש.

בשים לב לגודל ערך הענין וגודל ההכרח שבו, יהי' רצון שיצליח בהאמור וזכות הרבים מסייעתו, והלואי שיתבררו ויתלבנו הדברים ובקרוב ממש נזכה לקיום היעוד שישראל שומרים שבת כהלכתה ומיד הם נגאלים.
