Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7561 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem,

To the members of the committee for the dissemination of the book Eish Kodesh* (note 1: The Holy Fire), may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I received, with pleasure, your letter, to which was enclosed the book Eish Kodesh*, which Divine Providence* granted you the merit of publishing. In general, our Sages* have emphasized the importance of publishing words of Torah*. How much more is this the case when it concerns the words of the great ones of Israel, who guided thousands of people and who died to sanctify the Name of Hashem. The importance of all this is explained by Chassidus* (note 2: See the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 21, page 176), which cites, on this subject, the decisive proof constituted by the request and the prayer of our master, the Author (note 3: Of the Shulchan Aruch*, Rabbi Yosef Caro, the Beis Yosef*). Indeed, he too wished to die to sanctify the Name of Hashem. But a certain reason caused this request not to be granted, and this was then considered a punishment, although subsequently he had the merit of composing the Shulchan Aruch* and thereby becoming the guide of Israel until the end of the generations.

Our Sages* say that: "great is study that leads to action," and may Hashem therefore grant that the words of this book inflame the hearts of those who read and study it, for the love and fear of Hashem. Furthermore, love is the source of the two hundred and forty-eight Injunctions and fear of the three hundred and sixty-five Prohibitions, as the Alter Rebbe* explains at the beginning of chapter 4 of his holy Tanya*. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

נעם לי לקבל מכתבם בצירוף בהספר אש קדש, אשר זיכתם השגחה עליונה להו"ל עולם.

שאם בכלל הפליגו רז"ל בפרסום ד"ת עאכו"כ בכהנ"ל תורתם של גדולי ישראל, אשר אלפים הלכו לאורם ומתו על קידוש הי"ד.

וגודל הענין בזה מבואר בתורת הדא"ח במופת חותך מבקשת ותפלת מרן המחבר, שיזכה למות על קדוש שמו יתברך, וענין גרם שלא תתמלא בקשה זו ונחשב זה לעונש, אף שבשנים שלאחרי זה זכה לכתיבת השו"ע שלו מורה הוראה לישראל עד סוף כל בדורות.

ויהי רצון שגם בדברי ספר זה, הרי מתאים להוראת חז"ל גדול תלמוד שמביא לידי מעשה, יתעוררו לבבות הקוראים ולומדים בו, לאהבת השם וליראתו,

ולהענפים שלהם הם קיום רמ"ח מ"ע שהאהבה שרש להם, ושמירת שס"ה ל"ת אשר מיראה שרש להם (כביאור רבנו הזקן בספרו תניא קדישא ריש פרק ד').
