To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, of multiple accomplishments, the Rav Shear Yashuv HaKohen (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 7545),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your two books and I thank you for them. I am writing to you specifically about this, for it seems that in this matter as well the saying of our Sages* has been fulfilled, according to which: "Everything depends on Mazal*, including the Sefer Torah* found in the Holy Ark" — and, in this case, this printed book. I am referring to the Yesod VeShoresh HaAvodah* (note 2: "The Foundation and Source of the Service of Hashem"). This work has, indeed, been published with luminous characters, but "the basket has no handle" and this is sorely lacking. Our generation has become accustomed to having everything brought to it ready-made, immediately usable, without any effort on its part, and all the more so without significant effort.

Now, this book contains nearly five hundred pages, but it is entirely devoid of an index; it does not even have a simple table of contents indicating merely the beginning of each part, of each chapter. In my view, if the aim is to make it available to the greatest number, as is specified in the preface, a general index and, if possible, a detailed one, is indispensable. In this matter, the more precise one is, the better.

Naturally, our Sages* say that it is pointless to complain about the past. I would therefore not have written all this to you had I not seen the means of repairing what has been done, at least for the most part. It suffices, for this, to print a leaflet of several pages presenting this index and to include it with the books that will be sent. This is self-evident. I enclose an extract from a talk delivered on the day of the Hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 7567). I hope it will interest you. בת"ח מאשר הנני קבלת שני הספרים, ובאתי במכתב במיוחד, כיון שכנראה גם בהנ"ל ניכר מאמר חז"ל הכל תלוי במזל ואפילו ס"ת שבהיכל ובכגו"ד אפילו ספר שנדפס, כוונתי להספר יסוד ושרש העבודה אף שהדפסתו באותיות מאירות וכו' אבל אופן ההו"ל הוא שחסר אזנים לקופה וחסר ביותר, והרי דורנו זה הורגל שצריך להושיט הכל בקנה ושיהי' מוכן לקליטה מבלי כל טרחה ועאכו"כ טרחה יתירה.

והרי בספר הנ"ל המחזיק קרוב לת"ק עמודים, אין מפתח כלל ואפילו מפתח פשוט, ז.א. ציון התחלה של כל שער ופרק וכו' ולדעתי באם הכוונה ככתוב בהקדמה שיהי' שייך לחוג רחב, מוכרח ג"כ תוכן ענינים עכ"פ כללי ומה טוב פרטי, וכל המפרט בכגון דא ה"ז משובח.

מובן שע"פ ציווי חז"ל אין צועקין על העבר, לא הייתי כותב כל הנ"ל באם לא ראיתי דרך לתקון הגרעון בחלקו (חשוב) עכ"פ והוא ע"י הדפסה עלון של איזה עמודים ותוכנו אזנים הנ"ל ולצרפו לכל ספר הנשלח, וק"ל.
