Volume 20 · Letter 138 · To: dirigeants de la caisse de notre maître

By the grace of Hashem,

29 Shevat* 5721,

Brooklyn,

To the leaders of the fund of our master, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I received with pleasure your letter of 22 Shevat*, with what was enclosed therein. You inform me of the desire to strengthen the fund of our master. I have good hope that this motivation will be followed by effect, in a concrete manner, for the act is essential. Furthermore, the moment is propitious for this, since we are entering the month of Adar*, whose central point is the holiday of Purim*. One of its essential Mitzvos* is that of gifts to the poor, in addition to all the Precepts that one fulfills on Purim* and, in particular, the necessity to give to anyone who extends his hand, without prior examination. Now, precisely in our generation, within this exile, in the deep and intense darkness of the period of the heel of Moshiach*, one can observe the strength of audacity, as our Sages* comment at length. Despite this, one asks and solicits the blessings of Hashem, one wishes to obtain them precisely with benevolence and generosity. So that one may give to anyone who extends his hand, each person must therefore, in turn, do the same, as was indicated regarding the money that is distributed on Purim*.

Naturally, this is in no way comparable. The giving practiced here below has nothing in common with that which one expects from Hashem, and the level attained in this world, which is insignificant compared to the heavenly spheres, does not represent the unenviable situation of one who, unfortunately, extends his hand in order to receive alms from another person. Nevertheless, such is the value of audacity when it manifests in its positive dimension. As various texts establish, a man indeed has the power to transform all unfortunate elements, to make them specifically into good. You will consult, on this subject, the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "These are the Decrees," found in the Likkutei Torah*, at Parshas* Bechukosai*. And it is regarding this that it is said: "Audacity toward Hashem proves effective." With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, putting into practice the Mitzvah* according to which one increases one's joy — a true and also profound joy,
