Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7620 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 20 · Letter 176
By the grace of Hashem,
10 Nissan* 5721,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. Reuven Avinoam,
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your collection of poems entitled: "I Planted a Tree" and I thank you for it. It is surely unnecessary to specify to you that the soul is eternal. This is not only a fundamental principle of our faith, but also a logical idea, according to human rationality. In our era, in particular, an accepted scientific law states that nothing disappears, not even the most gross material objects. How much more is this the case for the soul, which gives life to matter. One can conclude from this that a soul that frees itself from the limits of the body and from the conditions of this material and gross world is better able to express its spirituality, its purity, which the body and the flesh conceal. It is for this reason that the soul is in a struggle against the body.
It also follows from this that every action of a nature to procure satisfaction for the soul, while it is still in the body, everything it accomplishes through its profound dimension, through its spirituality, but not through the movements of the perishable body, remains possible also after the soul has left the body. Moreover, it is then that it receives its full force, from two perspectives. On the one hand, the capacities of this soul are fully revealed, inasmuch as it no longer undergoes the veils and concealments. On the other hand, it can then attach itself to the spirit, for the spirituality, the light of such an action reaches it without the intermediary of the physical senses. This clarification will enable us to understand why our faith and our Torah*, Torah* of life, limit mourning to a certain period, stipulate that it is desirable in its time, but that it becomes forbidden once this period has passed. One can verify, in practice, that mourning reduces eagerness, vitality. Now, action is essential, both good deeds and their constancy. On the contrary, it is necessary to multiply them and to experience elevation in the domain of holiness. This is important not only for the one who acts, but also for the soul of the deceased.
May Hashem grant that actions in the spirit of our eternal Torah*, which is also a Torah* of life, a teaching for life in this world, illuminate your path and that of those around you, whom you in turn will influence in this direction. It is absolutely certain that this will bring satisfaction, to the fullest extent possible, to the soul of the deceased. And, very soon, the promise will be fulfilled according to which: "Hashem will wipe away the tears from all faces." With my respects, my blessing, and wishing you a Kosher* and joyous festival of Pesach*,
