To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of good conduct, filled with eagerness, of manifold accomplishments, the Rav Yosef (note 1: Rav Y. Petsipitsy, of Gibraltar. See, regarding him, letter no. 6689),

I greet you and bless you,

I am, quite obviously, of your opinion when you say that you must not abandon your location and your functions, Heaven forbid. Indeed, it appears that you are the only one disseminating traditional Judaism there in a fruitful manner. There is therefore a Mitzvah* here whose practice cannot be entrusted to someone else, at least in the near future. Now, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (note 2: In the manner in which one acts toward Him), but in a largely increased proportion. It is therefore certain that the domains linked to the fear of Hashem will not be diminished thereby, Heaven forbid, as you write. On the contrary, they will intensify. Indeed, to assume your functions, you must be in good health. This will therefore be the channel and the receptacle enabling the multiplication of the blessing of Hashem in your needs.

I enclose what has been published recently, in addition to what was sent to you independently, by mail. You will surely acknowledge receipt and you will be able to use it for the mission that has just been defined. In fact, one hears here about the critical situation of Judaism in Spain and Portugal. Perhaps it would be possible for you to go there from time to time. There is reason to think that you will be able to find, on the spot, persons capable of continuing what you will have begun there during this short visit. Moreover, these Jews will know that a little later, you will visit them once again. Without doubt, the travel expenses will not be very significant. In any event, if you communicate the amount to me, I will find half of it.

I add further that there was, it seems to me, in Madrid, a group of students (note 3: See letters no. 1972 and 1400. See also the memoirs of Rav Gorodetski, page 204) who observed the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. I hope that some of them are still active at the present time. In this way, it will be easier for you to motivate these persons, as I have said, which is, in my view, judicious and particularly important. I thank you for the good tidings you will send me of all this and I address to you my blessing of Mazal Tov* on the occasion of the birth of your son, Yechiel Binyamin, as you write to me. May Hashem grant that you and your wife educate him, together with all your children, to the Torah*, to the marriage canopy, and to good deeds. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

... מובן שתמים דיעה הנני עמו בהחלטתו שלא לעזוב ח"ו מקומו ותפקידו עתה, שכנראה הוא היחידי הפעיל בהפצת היהדות המסורתית באופן שיצליח, ז. א. שזהו בגדר מצוה שאי אפשר לעשותה על ידי אחרים (עכ"פ בעתיד הקרוב), וכיון שמדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה אלא שכמה פעמים ככה, בודאי שלא יוגרע ח"ו בעניני יראת שמים אודותם כותב ואדרבה עוד יתוסף בהם, וכיון שמילוי התפקיד דורש בריאות הנכונה הרי זה גם צנור וכלי להוספה בברכת השם יתברך בהמצטרך.

מוסגר פה ממה שנדפס לאחרונה נוסף על מה שנשלח בדואר בפ"ע, ובטח יאשר קבלתם ויוכל לנצל זה לעבודתו האמורה.

ע"פ השמועה כאן אודות העזובה בעניני יהדות בשפאניא ופארטוגאל, אולי היתה אפשרית שיבקר שם מזמן לזמן, והרי קרוב לומר שעל אתר ימצא אחדים שיוכלו להמשיך מה שיתחיל הוא בביקור קצר, ובפרט בידעם שלאחרי זמן מסוים יבקרם עוד הפעם, ובנוגע להוצאות הדרך, הרי בטח לא רבות הן, ובכל אופן אמציאם מחציתן כשיודיע המגיע.

ועוד להוסיף שכמדומה היתה קיימת במדריד קבוצה של סטודנטין שומרי תורה ומצות ותקותי שישנן פעילים גם עתה, ויקל האמור על התעוררות האמורה לעיל שלדעתי נכונה ונחוצה היא ביותר.
