To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Moshe Yosef Rubin, former president of the rabbinical association of Romania,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter and following up on our discussion about the effort that must be undertaken for the repair of the fences surrounding the cemeteries of European communities, which were unfortunately destroyed and emptied during the period of the war and the Shoah*. I commend you for this positive accomplishment. The honor of the deceased is particularly important and, in this case, it also concerns that of the living. The good that is bestowed upon the dead is described as "true kindness," for it is devoid of any expectation of gratitude (note 1: Which cannot be expected from the dead. The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Shnei Luchos HaBris*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vayechi*"). In this sense, it is a heavenly revelation (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "According to a letter of the Rebbe Rashab*, which is cited in the Kovetz Michtavim*, letter no. 10." This appears in the Igros Kodesh of the Rebbe Rashab*, volume 1, letter no. 176), a gift, a "true kindness" that is in no way limited, even if the act accomplished remains relatively modest, as, for example, when: "He lent a hoe and a shovel for the burial" (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Taanis* 21b").

How much more is this the case for the subject of our discussion. The importance of such an accomplishment is immense and it concerns thousands of Jews. Moreover, it is also a sanctification of the Name of Hashem, ensuring that the name of Israel not be transgressed among the nations. I firmly hope that this effort will find a favorable echo in the hearts of our brothers, the children of Israel, who will contribute generously to its realization — to the restoration of the fences of these cemeteries, to the reconstruction of what was destroyed — until the fulfillment of the promise (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Yechezkel* 37:12-14") of Hashem: "I will open your graves and I will raise you up... I will place My spirit upon you and you will live." With my respects and my blessing,

במענה למכתבו ושיחתנו בענין מפעל תיקון הגדרים בבתי החיים בקהלות באירופא שנחרבו ונתרוקנו בעוה"ר בימי המלחמה והשואה ר"ל,

אמינא לפעלא טבא יישר, וגדול יקרא דשיכבא ובנידון דידן גם יקרא דחיי.

ואם כל חסד שעושים עם המתים הוא חסד של אמת שהוא למעלה מתשלום גמול, כ"א שנותנים לו מלמעלה (בדרך מתנה) בחי' חסד של אמת הבלתי מוגבל, ואפילו אם עושה דבר קטן הערך וכמו שייל אבא וזבילא לקבורה.

על אחת כמה וכמה בענין האמור גדול הערך, ונוגע לאלפים מישראל ובמיוחד שיש בזה ענין של קידוש השם, שלא יהא שם ישראל מחולל בעמים.

וחזק בטחוני שמפעל זה ימצא הד נכון בלבות אחינו בני ישראל להתנדב ברוח נדיבה לביצועו - לגדור הפרצות בבתי עלמין ולבנות הנהרסות.

עדי יקויים יעוד אד-ני ה': הנה אני פותח את קברותיכם והעליתי אתכם גו' ונתתי רוחי בכם וחייתם.
