By the grace of Hashem,

20 Tammuz* 5721,

Brooklyn, New York,

I bless you and greet you,

I read with pleasure your letter, in which you inform me that you will be married soon, that you have decided to build your home in conformity with the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life. May Hashem grant that you put this decision into practice, with the chosen one of your heart, all the more so since, from what I have heard of your family, your lineage will protect you in this domain. And, it is not for nothing that the woman is called "mistress of the house." For, it is essentially she who directs the home, so that its state depends on her.

Moreover, in our era of multiple events and transformations, there is no other solid and stable foundation, perpetuating the Jewish home, than the Torah* and its Mitzvos*. On this depends happiness that is not only moral but also physical. How much more is this the case in our Holy Land, "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." Provided that he sets aside subjective prejudices, a wise person can easily establish, even after a cursory reflection, to what extent the events of our era, the good ones and those that are not, have proven that: "You have chosen us from among all the peoples." Of course, our election by the Creator of the world, as His treasured people, confers upon us not only particular rights but also specific duties. We must illuminate all our actions, our daily existence, with the true light — that of the Torah* and its Mitzvos* — through thought, speech, and action, the latter being essential. It is also incumbent upon us to disseminate and plant the clarity of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, according to the expression that the Baal Shem Tov* cites in his letter: "May your wellsprings spread forth to the outside" — the wellsprings of light and love, based on the love of Hashem for His people, the children of Israel. Because of His immense love, He specifically sanctified us through His commandments, which are the channel and the receptacle enabling one to receive the blessings of Hashem, both material and spiritual. With my blessing of Mazal Tov*, Mazal Tov*, and to give good tidings of all this,

I enclose the content of a talk that was delivered on the occasion of the gathering of the Chabad* women, which took place recently. Of course, these words are addressed to you as well and to the milieu in which you move.

ברכה ושלום!

נעם לי לקרוא מכתבה בו כותבת על דבר חתונתה בקרוב ועל דבר החלטתם לייסד ביתם מתאים להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים. ויהי רצון שתקיים יחד עם בחיר לבה החלטה האמורה, בפרט אשר כפי ששמעתי על משפחתה הרי גם צור מחצבתה יעמוד לה בזה.

ולא לחנם נקראה אשה "עקרת הבית" כי עיקר הנהגת הבית וכל מעמדו ומצבו תלוי בעיקר בבעלת הבית.

ובפרט בתקופתנו זו רבת המאורעות והתהפוכות, אין לך יסוד חזק ומוצק לקיום בית בישראל אלא התורה ומצוותי', שבזה תלוי כל אשרו לא רק הרוחני אלא גם הגופני, ועל אחת כמה וכמה בארצנו הקדושה, ארץ אשר עיני ה' אלקיך בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה. ואף בהתבוננות קלה, אלא שבלי דיעות קדומות ומשוחדות, דעת לנבון נקל עד כמה הדגישו המאורעות שבתקופתנו זו, הטובים וגם הבלתי-טובים, את הענין ד"אתה בחרתנו מכל העמים". ומובן שבחירת בורא העולם בנו להיות לו לעם סגולה - נותנת לנו לא רק זכויות מיוחדות אלא גם חובות מיוחדות, להאיר כל פעולותינו וחיינו היום-יומיים באור האמתי אור התורה ומצוותי', במחשבה ודיבור ובמעשה שהוא העיקר. וכן מחובתנו להפיץ ולזרוע אור תורה ומצוה, וכלשון הבעל שם טוב שמביא באגרתו יפוצו מעינותיך חוצה, מעינות אור ואהבה מיוסדים על אהבת ה' לעמו בני ישראל, שמרוב אהבתו קדשנו במצותיו דוקא, ושהם הצנור והכלי לקבלת ברכות השי"ת בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
