By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Menachem Av*, in which you briefly describe what your life has been until now. Then, you pose the following questions:

A) How to prevail in the battle that one wages against the evil inclination? In conformity with a well-known teaching of our Sages*, a little light suffices to dispel much darkness. How much more is this the case when it concerns much light. You must therefore, first and foremost, lead a daily existence that conforms to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and to the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." To this is added the following precept: "I place Hashem perpetually before me." A verse must not be deprived of its simple meaning and, by meditating on the fact that Hashem stands before you, that He observes not only your actions and your words but also your thoughts, it is clear that you will master your evil inclination and that you will entrust the power to your divine soul, emanating from the good, advocating conduct that conforms to the Will of Hashem, Creator of the world in the literal sense and of the "small world" that is man. To strengthen the specific help that one receives from Hashem in this domain, it would be good, each weekday, before the morning prayer, to set aside several coins for Tzedakah*. Likewise, you should have your Tefillin* checked if this has not been done in the last twelve months.

B) You ask me where you should endeavor to settle on a permanent basis (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7041). The following words of the great master, the Rambam*, at the beginning of the sixth chapter of the Laws of Character Traits, are well known and should be consulted: "Man was created in such a way that he is influenced, in his opinions and in his actions, by his acquaintances and by his friends. He adopts the behavior of the people of his location." This means that one must endeavor to settle near those who fear the Word of Hashem and fulfill His Mitzvos*, in a concrete manner and on a daily basis. This concerns, in particular, the residence that one chooses after marriage, when Hashem grants the blessing of having sons and daughters (note 2: Who must attend a Jewish school). The environment then plays a determining role in their education, perhaps even more than the parents and the influence they exert. These are injunctions of Hashem and it is clear that He demands only in accordance with the strength at one's disposal. It is therefore possible to put all of this into practice.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the "great principle of the Torah*," which is: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." Its immediate consequence is the dissemination of Judaism and of everything that concerns it, among the children of Israel in general, where your influence extends, in particular. במענה למכתבו מג' מנ"א, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מסדר חייו עתה ושואל:

א)כיצד להתגבר במלחמת היצר.

וע"פ מאמר חז"ל הידוע, דאפילו מעט אור דוחה הרבה חשך ועאכו"כ הרבה אור, עליו לכל לראש להתנהג בחייו היום יומים מתאים להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים ובקיום מצותי' עליהם נאמר וחי בהם, ובזה הנקודה שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד, שאין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו ובהתבוננו אשר ה' נצב עליו, ורואה, לא רק מעשיו ודבוריו, אלא גם מחשבותיו, בודאי אשר ירסן זה את היצר וישליט נפש האלקית מצד הטוב להתנהג מתאים לרצון השם, בורא עולם (כפשוטו, ועולם קטן זה האדם).

להרבות העזר מיוחד מלמעלה בהאמור, מהנכון אשר בכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבקר יפריש פרוטות אחדות לצדקה, וכן אשר יבדקו את התפילין שלו - באם לא נעשה כזה במשך שנים עשר חדש האחרונים -.

ב) לכתבו אודות מקום הסתדרותו לדור בקביעות.

ידועים דברי המורה הגדול הוא הרמב"ם: "דרך ברייתו של האדם להיות נמשך בדעותיו ובמעשיו אחר ריעיו וחבריו נוהג כמנהג אנשי" המקום (הלכות דיעות פרק ו' בתחלתו, עיי"ש), מזה מובן שיש להשתדל לקבוע דירתו בסביבה חרדים לדבר ה' ומקיימי מצותיו בפועל יום יום ובפרט מקום דירה לאחרי הנשואין, שיברך השי"ת בבנים ובבנות, הרי הסביבה עיקר גדול בחינוכם לא פחות ואולי עוד יותר מאשר ההורים והשפעתם, וכיון שכל האמור הוא בכלל ציווי השם יתברך, בודאי שהשם אינו מבקש אלא לפי הכח, ובמילא ישנה האפשרית לקיים את כל הנ"ל.

בודאי למותר לעוררו על הכלל גדול בתורה, ואהבת לרעך כמוך, שמזה התוצאה מידית, להפיץ היהדות ועניני' בתוככי בני ישראל בכל מקום שידו מגעת.
