To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Chaim Hillel (note 1: Rav H. H. Azimov, of Paris. See, regarding him, letter no. 5025),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 15 Av*, with what was enclosed. You ask me about the time of the conclusion of Shabbos* (note 2: Presumably for the purpose of establishing the Jewish calendar for the new year). This is not identical in all countries and at all periods of the year. It is therefore necessary to consult the Rabbanim* who teach the Halachah* in Paris and its region, who possess knowledge in this matter.

To concretely determine the precise time of sunrise and sunset, one should consult the calendar published by the astronomical association of France, for this body is expert and trustworthy in this matter. However, the time of sunset that it indicates is not always that of the Shulchan Aruch*. In any event, this point will not be developed here. With my blessing to give good tidings,

והנה אינו שוה בכל המדינות ובכל חדשי השנה ולכן צריך להתדבר בזה עם מורי הוראה בישראל בפאריז וסביבותי' אלה שיש להם ידיעה בהלכתא רבתא זו.

ולדעת בדיוק זמן נץ החמה שקיעת החמה בפועל, יש לראות הלוח היו"ל מטעם החברה האוסטרונומית דצרפת, שהרי מומחים הם במקצוע זה ונאמנים, אלא שהם מציינים שקיעת החמה בפועל, שלא תמיד הוא שקיעת החמה ע"פ שו"ע, ואכמ"ל.
