Igrot Kodesh · Letter 773 — Teshuvah
Volume 4 · Letter 8 · To: Juste
By the grace of Hashem,
7 Tishri 5711,
Brooklyn,
To the Tzaddik*, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,
descendant of an illustrious lineage, Rabbi Y. [1],
I greet and bless you,
I would like to wish you, by the present, to be definitively inscribed for a good and sweet year, material and spiritual.
May Hashem grant that we accomplish His Will, contribute our share to spreading the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov outward. It is thus that one prepares for the coming of our righteous Mashiach*, that one forms the vessel that allows one to obtain it.
Wishing you to be definitively inscribed for a good year,
M. Schneerson,
You will find enclosed the fascicle of the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, published on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, which has just appeared. It will surely interest you [2].
A point may be briefly defined, regarding the service of the Creator in this period of Teshuvah*. It is said, at the beginning of the creation of the world: "And there was evening, and there was morning, day one." There are, in fact, two conceptions about time, which can be defined as a continuous process or as a succession of moments. One can find this controversy in the wording of tractate Nazir 7a and in the opinion of Rabba.
On the other hand, all opinions agree to recognize that night and day form one and the same process, without interruption. For day and night are only manifestations of time, which therefore do not affect its nature.
One may think, on the contrary, that each day is specific, since each receives a particular content, according to the Zohar, vol. 3, p. 94b. The weekly cycle therefore counts seven days, all different, but only seven. It is then another cycle that begins.
What has just been said has an effect on the service of Hashem. It is specified that in the end, no one will be cast away, and intentional transgressions will be transformed into merits, for Hashem "will cause the spirit of impurity to disappear from the earth." Then "the night will shine as the day." This is what may be said of day and night. Each day, by contrast, is independent, and in the world to come each Tzaddik* will be dazzled by the canopy raised for his fellow.
