Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7733 — Tzedakah

I am surprised to have no news of the manner in which you are settling in order to earn your livelihood. This is indeed an injunction of our Torah*, Torah* of life. A man must perform a concrete action for the purpose of ensuring his material subsistence. What is more, our Sages*, in the Mechilta*, assimilate this injunction to a positive commandment of the Torah*. You will also consult the Kuntres U'Maayan*, at chapter 25, underscoring the necessity of an action performed in this world, which is precisely the world of action. Now, if this is necessary, it is certain that the strengths and the capacities to achieve it have been granted. And, the obligation to act is increased all the more, so that these capacities do not remain unused, which should not come to pass. I hope that these few lines will suffice to draw your attention to all of this, so that you put all of this into practice with all the necessary eagerness. I therefore shorten the present letter and I await your good tidings. May Hashem grant them at the earliest possible time.

It is unnecessary to explain at length that what has just been said and, more generally, everything that concerns Jewish life must be orderly and organized. The behavior of the domain of holiness is thus, whereas on the "other side," there is no order, no reasoning. I am indeed alluding to organization in all domains — for rising, for sleeping, for the study of the Torah*, of its revealed part and of Chassidus*, for eating, for drinking and, above all, of course, for the relations within your home. Indeed, great is the peace that reigns between a man and his wife. It is when it reigns that the Divine Presence reveals itself among them.

לפלא שאין ממנו כל ידיעות בהנוגע להסתדרותו בעניני פרנסה, והרי גם זה מציווי תורתנו תורת חיים, אשר על האדם להתעסק בעניני פרנסה בעשי' בפועל, ולא עוד אלא שאמרו במכילתא שהציווי הוא מעין מצות עשה, ועיין קונטרס ומעין פרק כ"ה איך שמוכרח עשי' דוקא בעולמנו, עולם העשי'. וכיון שמוכרח הדבר בודאי שניתנו הכחות והאפשריות על זה [שזהו עוד מגדיל יותר הכרח העשי' בפועל, שלא ישארו אפשריות אלו לבטלה ח"ו], ותקותי ששורותי אלה תספיקנה לעוררו על דבר כל האמור, ושיעשה בזה במרץ הדרוש. ואקצר ואחכה לבשו"ט בזה, ויהי רצון שתהיינה בהקדם.

ובודאי למותר להאריך, שבהאמור לעיל ובכלל בחיי האדם הישראלי - צריכים להיות בסדר מסודר, שזהו דוקא הנהגה דקדושה [משא"כ בלעומת זה שאין סדר וחשבון וכו'], כוונתי סדר בכל הענינים, בקימה מהשינה, לימודים בתורה נגלה וחסידות, אכילה ושתי' וכו'. ובזה כמובן ועיקר בעניני היחסים בבית, שהרי גדול השלום שבין איש לאשתו, שאז שכינה שרוי' ביניהם.
