I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Menachem Av*, in which you ask me whether a student of a Yeshivah* in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, is liable to be drafted into the army. I am surprised that you are in doubt on this subject, to the point of being led to pose this question in a distant place. You know, after all, the halachic* ruling of the Rabbanim*, which has been widely disseminated and which, of course, is based on our Torah*, Torah* of life, according to which Yeshivah* students cannot be drafted or enlisted in the army.

Indeed, their study of our holy Torah*, conducted with ardor and enthusiasm, protects and safeguards our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, as well as all those who reside there. With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

אשר בני ישיבה אין לגייסם ולא יצאו בצבא. ולימודם תורתנו הקדושה בהתמדה ושקידה - מגין ומציל על ארצנו הקדושה ת"ו ועל הדרים עלי'.
