To Mr. Tzvi (note 1: Mr. T. Bronstein, of Kfar Chabad*),

I greet you and bless you,

After an interruption, I duly received your letter of 27 Menachem Av*. I took note therein, with pleasure, of the actions that you are conducting, "with the objective of: 'you shall spread forth'" (note 2: "To the west and to the east, to the north and to the south" — actions of dissemination of Judaism), to use your expression, as well as of your lectures on the theme of Chabad*. I have, however, good hope that you are not content with this alone, for such an accomplishment is in no way commensurate with the demand and the necessity of the moment. Indeed, one can observe at every step how many of our brothers, the children of Israel, are hungry and thirsty (note 3: Morally). Their soul faints, but they do not know how to quench their thirst and appease their hunger, which is even worse than famine and drought in themselves. This is self-evident. It follows that the necessity of such action is affirmed all the more clearly. The responsibility and the merit are all the greater.

What is more, these days are a period of mercy and goodwill, "like the first" (note 4: Before the sin of the golden calf was committed). They belong to the month of Elul*, when the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, is in the field and welcomes each person there with benevolence, as the Likkutei Torah* explains, in Parshas* Re'eh*, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "I am to my Beloved," page 32b. לאחרי הפסק נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ז מנ"א... נעם לי לקרות במכתבו אודות פעולות ככתבו בהמגמה של ופרצת, והרצאות על נושאי חב"ד, אבל התקוה חזקה שאין מסתפק כלל בהאמור, שהרי אין זה בערך לדרישת והכרח השעה, וכנראה במוחש על כל צעד ושעל איך שכו"כ מאחב"י רעבים וגם צמאים ונפשם בהם תתעטף, עד כדי כך שאין יודעים במה ירוו את צמאונם ולהשביע הרעבון שלהם, שזהו מדריגה ירודה עוד יותר ברעבון וצמאון, וק"ל. שמזה מובן שגם הכרח הפעולה בזה גדולה פי כמה, וביחד עם זה האחריות והזכות.

ובפרט שהימים ימי רחמים ורצון כימים הראשונים ימי חדש אלול, ואשר המלך - ממה"מ הקב"ה - נמצא בשדה ומקבל את כל אחד בספ"י (עיין לקו"ת פ' ראה ד"ה אני לדודי, לב, ב).
