To my distinguished and pleasant friend, the great Rav,

Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Eliyahu (note 2: Rav Eliyahu Simpson, of Brooklyn),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your telegram concerning our friend, Rav M. D. Friedman (note 3: See, regarding him, the Igros Kodesh* of the previous Rebbe*, volume 4, letter no. 914) and I am enclosing a letter from the Rebbe* Shlita*. In fact, I am writing to you although I do not know you, for I have heard your praises and I know that you are one of the very first students of the Yeshivah* Lubavitch, one of the most important, that you are attached to the Rebbe* Shlita*, to whom it is, in your view, fundamental and pleasant to give satisfaction. I therefore specify to you that it matters to the Rebbe* Shlita* to acquire books for his library. The Chassidim* should therefore send him some, that is, intervene with the Rabbanim* who are authors so that they send their works, free of charge, to the library of the Rebbe* Shlita*.

You will give immense satisfaction to the Rebbe* by procuring for him old books published in America, whatever their content — commentary, Chumash*, Siddur*, Haggadah*, Selichos*, supplications, Machzor*, or other. These can also be works of Halachah*, exegesis, and analysis. An old calendar, an order of the Hoshanos*, or a counting of the Omer* will also be considered positive elements. It would be good for you to research the booksellers in New York, to obtain their addresses and their catalogue, in order to send them to the director of the library of the Rebbe* Shlita*, Mr. H. Lieberman. He will determine what is missing from the library and you will endeavor to procure it. With the appropriate respect,

במענה על הטעלעגראם אודות ידידינו רמ"ד שי' פרידמן. הנה מוסגר בזה מכתב מאת כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א.

מדי כתבי לכבודו הנה אנכי אינני מכירו, אבל כפי ששמעתי שבחו, אשר הנהו אחד מתלמידי התמימים הישנים, והי' בין החשובים, והוא קשור לכ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א, ויקר וחביב לו לעשות קורת רוח לכ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א, הנני כותב לו, אשר כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א מתענין מאד בהשגת ספרים עבור הביביליאתיקה שלו, אשר על כן היו צריכים אנ"ש שי' לשלוח לו ספרים. זאת אומרת להשתדל אשר הרבנים המחברים ישלחו ספריהם בתור תשורה להביבליאתיקה של כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א.

קורת רוח גדול יגרום לכ"ק אדמו"ר כאשר ישיג איזה ספרים ישנים אשר נדפסו באמעריקא, מבלי התחשב עם התוכן אם הם ספרי רומיל חומש סידור הגדה סליחה קינה ומחזור והדומה, או ספרי הלכה חידוש ודרוש. גם לוח ישן וסדר הושענות וספירת העומר לדבר טוב יחשב.

נכון הדבר אשר כבודו יחקור וידרוש אודות מוכרי ספרים הנמצאים בנוי-יארק וישיג האדרעסין שלהם עם הקטלוגין ולשלוח זאת למנהל הביבליאתיקה של כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט"א מר ח. ליברמאן, אשר הוא יברר את החסר בהביבליאתיקה, ואז ישתדלו להשיגם.
