who fears Hashem, Rav Ch. Havlin (note 1: Rav Chanoch Hendel Havlin. See, regarding him, letter no. 860),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Nissan* of this year and I emphasize that the revenue obtained from the sale of our publications is necessary for us to publish other works. It is therefore impossible for us to distribute them free of charge. Nevertheless, our representatives must indeed, for example in order to make themselves known, graciously offer a portion of the booklets that are sent to them. Furthermore, there are also other expenses that must be covered. Taking all of this into account, we agree to grant you a reduction of twenty percent (20%) relative to the established price (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 122 and the following letter). If you see fit to distribute a greater number of booklets than this allows, it is appropriate that you find donors on site who will finance this dissemination. In any event, for our part, we cannot go beyond these 20%.

Without a doubt, your efforts will also extend to the past, to the extent possible, for the shortfall in sales revenue prevents the publication of various works. We are prepared to send you the number of copies of the periodical HaKriah VeHaKedushah* that you will indicate to us, in response to the present letter and under the above conditions. You will kindly acknowledge receipt of each shipment, specifying the number of copies it contains. You have surely already received the HaYom Yom* collections. I have inquired as to the situation regarding the Kuntres U'Maayan (note 3: One of the works of the Rebbe Rashab*), for I have heard that it was printed in Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt, perhaps even before the First World War. I therefore wanted to know whether this information is correct and, if so, whether it is possible and easy to obtain several copies of this edition.

We are now publishing the first testament of the Rebbe* (note 4: The Rebbe Rashab*. It refers to the booklet entitled Chanoch LaNaar, "Educate the Child," concerning the education that the Rebbetzin* was to give to their only son, the Rebbe Rayatz*), the Kuntres U'Maayan, with additions from my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*. We are preparing the edition of the talk of this festival of Pesach*, as well as the notes of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, providing previously unpublished details on the biography of the Alter Rebbe*. With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah* and immediate redemption,

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ח ניסן ש"ז, הננו להעיר כי באשר ההכנסה ממכירת עניני הדפוס נחוצה לנו להדפסת ענינים אחרים, אי אפשר לנו להפיצם חנם. ורק בשים לב לזה כי באי-כחנו מוכרחים לתכלית תעמולה וכדו' לחקל חנם לכה"פ חלק מהחוברות הנשלחות להם, ושיש גם הוצאות אחרות בזה, מוכנים אנו להסכים לעשות להם הנחה של עשרים אחוזים למאה (20

) מהמחיר הקבוע, ובאם תראו צ[ו]רך לחלק יותר חנם, נחוץ למצוא על אתר נדבנים, אשר יתנו סכומים קצובים לתכלית הפצת הנ"ל, אבל אנו מצדנו איננו יכולים לוותר יותר מעל 20

כנ"ל.

ובלי ספק גם אלשעבר בטח ישתדל ככל יכולתו, כי חוסר ההכנסה בממכירות מעכב הדפסת כמה ענינים.

מוכנים אנו לשלוח מהקוה"ק וכו' כפי המספר אשר יורה במענה על מכתבנו זה, וע"פ תנאים הנ"ל, ומטובו לאשר בכל פעם קבלת החבילות בהוראת מספר העקז' מכאו"א. קובץ "היום יום" בטח הגיעו.

שאלתי ע"ד קונטרס "ומעין" כי שמעתי אומרים שהדפיסו אותו בירושת"ו לפני המלחמה הראשונה?) וחפצתי לברר, ואם באפשרי ובנקל להשיג עקז' מהוצאה ההיא.
