I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter, to which were attached the checks of Mr. P. Rottenberg. I thank you for your intervention in this matter. I have good hope that in the future, you will take an interest, as will your dear brothers, in the work of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch* (note 2: Literally, the Center of Activity for Education), down to its smallest aspect, and that you will grant us your help, to the fullest extent of your means and possibilities. Indeed, this work is very diversified. Without a doubt, several of its facets will arouse your keenest interest. You will therefore be able to participate in it yourselves and convince others to do so.

In the Parshah* of this week, one finds the verse (Vayigash* 46:28): "And he sent Yehudah before him." Rashi* explains: "in order to establish there a house of study." Thus, even before arriving in Egypt, that is, in a new place, Yaakov had already planned a house of study and he had concerned himself with the education of his sons and daughters in that place. Now, what is true in space is equally true in time. Whoever wishes to have, in the future, a blessed generation, sons and daughters of Israel, must endeavor to prepare for this while there is still time. This is precisely the objective of education, which guides young children on the right path from their earliest age.

The objective of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch*, the mission assigned to it by my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, when he founded this institution and placed its direction upon my shoulder, is the necessary effort so that this education be based on sacred values, without affiliation to any particular party. Indeed, the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch* is concerned with all components of the Jewish people — the Chassidim*, those who are not, those originating from Hungary, from Poland. Whoever takes part in this work becomes one of the founders, the builders of the young generation, which will be the pride and glory of our people, the children of Israel. In the hope of receiving your news often concerning concrete action and with my blessing for immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption,

תקותי חזקה, אשר מכאן ולהבא יתענין כבו', וכן אחיו הנכבדים שי', בעבודת המרכז לעניני חינוך לכל פרטי' ויתנו לנו עזרתם בכל אפשריותם ויכלתם.

כי עבודה זו מרובת גונים היא, ובלי ספק אשר כמה סניפים ממנה יענינו אותם ביותר ויוכלו להשתתף בהם בעצמם וכן ע"י השפעתם על אחרים.

בפרשת השבוע על הפסוק (ויגש מו, כח) ואת יהודא שלח לפניו פירש"י לתקן לו בית תלמוד, כי קודם שבא יעקב למצרים - מקום חדש - כבר הכין לו שם בית מדרש, ודאג לחינוך בניו ובנותיו.

וכמו שהוא במקום כך הוא בזמן, שכל הרוצה שגם בעתיד יהי' דור ישרים יבורך מבני ובנות ישראל עליו להשתדל לעשות בעוד מועד כל ההכנות הדרושות לזה, וזהו ענין החינוך שמדריכים ילדים וילדות מקטנותם בדרך הטוב והישר.

ותפקיד "מרכז לעניני חינוך" ומטרתו אשר הציג לו כ"ק מו"ח אדמור שליט"א ביסדו את ה"מרכז" ובהעמיסו עול הנהלת ועד הפועל על שכמי, הוא להשתדל שתהי' הדרכה זו על טהרת הקודש ומבלי חלוק מפלגה, כי מתענין המרכז לעיני חינוך בכל חוגי עם ישראל, חסידים, עולם'שע, ובני אונגארן, בני פולין, וכו'. וכל המשתתף בעבודה זו הרי הוא ממיסדי ובוני הדור הצעיר שיהיו לגאון ולתפארת עמנו בני ישראל.

בתקוה לשמוע ממנו בענינים של פועל לעתים תכופות, ובברכה לאלתר לתשובה לאלתר לגאולה.
