To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Sh. Z. (note 1: Rav Shneur Zalman Butman. See, regarding him, letters no. 4891, 7821, 7927, and 8070),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letters of the 6th and 8th of Menachem Av*, which I duly received and for which I thank you:

A) In my humble opinion, the Chassidic* discourse that your son (note 2: Rav Shalom Dov Ber Butman) should choose to recite at his Bar Mitzvah* will be one of those found in a Sefer HaMaamarim* in your possession.

B) A Siddur* Torah Ohr*, with the Machzor*, is intended for you, as I promised you. The second will be put up for sale.

C) You will kindly transmit two Sefer HaSichos* (note 3: The Sefer HaSichos* summer 5700 (1940), of the previous Rebbe*) to the Lubavitch community (note 4: Of Paris). You will send two to Poking (note 5: The refugee camp in Germany where the Chassidim* were located. See letters no. 7808 and 7809), one to Kalmenson, in Prague (note 6: See letters no. 7805, 7806, and 7808). One will be transmitted to Rav B. T. Shem Tov (note 7: See letter no. 7808), one to the young Shalom Dov Ber Schneersohn, one for you, and the rest for sale.

D) Eight Siddurim* Tehillas Hashem are for the Beis Rivkah* of Paris, four for the Beis Sarah of Prague, to the attention of Kalmenson, five for Eranie (note 8: In the Parisian suburbs, where a large number of Chassidim* were located), to the attention of Rav M. Lipsker (note 9: Rav Michael Lipsker, who himself resided in that place. See, regarding him, letter no. 7814), two for two young girls — the one being raised by Rav Sh. Sosonka and the granddaughter of Horkov (note 10: Mrs. Kreina Gurkov), who asked me to convey their request to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*. And the rest will be put up for sale.

E) One will give to Rav M. Lipsker, for Eranie and Boissy (note 8: In the Parisian suburbs, where a large number of Chassidim* were located), three copies of volumes 1 and 2 of the Sifreinu (note 11: A manual for learning to read), of volumes 1 and 2 of the Unzer Buch (note 12: A manual for learning Yiddish). The committee of the Beis Rivkah*, in Paris, will receive eight copies of each book and Prague, three of each. The rest will be put up for sale. The prices of all these books are inscribed on the cover of the Sefer HaSichos*. The books offered as gifts, but not those that will be sold, will bear the inscription: "Gift of the Merkos," with a stamp that is in the possession of Rav Y. Lipsker (note 13: Rav Yaakov Lipsker, brother of Rav Michael Lipsker. See the following letter).

F) You have surely conveyed my greetings to Rav Sh. B. (note 14: Rav Shmuel Betzalel Althuiz), as I asked you in my previous letter (note 15: It refers to letter no. 273). I thank you.

G) Is there eagerness being shown concerning the Maamad* (note 16: See, on this subject, letter no. 7809)?

H) Concerning your work at the Beis Rivkah*, you will kindly inform me what your role was on the committee of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* in Paris. Indeed, one must ensure that your work for the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch* or for the Machaneh* does not contradict this function. For, "great is peace, since the Torah* was given solely to bring it about in the world," according to the words of the Sifri*, which is cited by the Rambam* at the end of the laws of Chanukah*. And, in this regard, you will also consult the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos* (note 17: Ohr HaTorah*, Parshas Noach*, volume 3, at page 669a), at the end of Parshas Noach*. ז. העושים בענין המעמד בזריזות?

ח. בנוגע לעבודתו בבית רבקה, מטובו להודיעני, מה היתה עבודתו בועד תומכי תמימים בפאריז, כי צריך לסדר באופן שעבודתו במל"ח או מחנה לא תהי' בסתירה להנ"ל. וגדול השלום שכל התורה ניתנה לעשות שלום בעולם (ספרי הובא ברמב"ם סוף הל' חנוכה. ועייגכ בלקו"ת לג"פ ס"פ נח).
