Igrot Kodesh · Letter 783 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 18

By the grace of Hashem,
Chol HaMoed Sukkos 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the Rabbi, distinguished Chassid, who fears Hashem,
Rabbi Y. [1],

I greet and bless you,

You will find enclosed the fascicle published on the occasion of Shemini Atzeres* and Simchas Torah*. You will doubtless make it available to those around you in order to provoke, strengthen and illuminate, from now and for all the rest of the year, the joy of Torah, which will manifest itself in those whom you reach, will firm itself up and illuminate the joy of the Mitzvah*. They will therefore be able to study Torah and fulfill the Mitzvot* in a more elevated manner.

Indeed, the Torah is considered as the totality of the Mitzvot*, and it leads to their practice [2]. In the same way, Simchas Torah* provokes the joy of the Mitzvah* [3], brings the strength to serve Hashem with joy [4] and enthusiasm. For joy breaks all limits, above as below. It distances from the passions, removes severity, and allows one to advance "in the Light of the face of the living Hashem."

At the conclusion of the festivals — after Rosh Hashanah*, Yom Kippur*, Sukkos*, Shemini Atzeres*, Simchas Torah* — a Jew must reintegrate into the workdays. Moreover, he then enters into winter [5] and, for nearly half a year, will know no festivals [6]. He must therefore take "provisions" for the road, forces and blessings that will allow him to put into practice the Injunction "And Yaakov went on his way," so that he may progress with certainty, even though all roads are reputed dangerous.

It is therefore on Shemini Atzeres* that one collects all the blessings, of general bearing, that are obtained during the month of Tishri. Then, on Simchas Torah*, the new blessing begins to reveal itself [7]. Hence, it is easier to put into practice, throughout the year, the good resolutions taken during this month.

Furthermore, this Simchas Torah* will introduce the joy of the Mitzvah* into all the days of the year. Thus, the limits, barriers, and obstacles to the study of Torah and to the practice of the Mitzvot* will definitively disappear.

Indeed, Simchas Torah* reveals the highest light, surrounding everything at once and gathering all the lights of the month of Tishri.

What has just been said will allow us to understand two opposite aspects of Shemini Atzeres* and Simchas Torah*:

A) The Jewish custom, which is an integral part of the Torah, is to rejoice — far beyond Simchas Beis HaShoeva* [8] — more than at any other festival [9].

B) The joy of the festival is a Mitzvah* of the Torah, which occupies a particular place on Sukkos* and for Simchas Beis HaShoeva*, as the verse clearly establishes. The joy that accompanies the fulfillment of the Mitzvah* is also a Mitzvah* [10]. By contrast, the joy of the last festivals of Sukkos* is established only by an inference made from a verse. Obviously, this does not allow one to show the intensity of this joy. Moreover, according to certain opinions [11], this joy is not instituted by the Torah.

But in reality, one can consider that these two points are bound — the one justifying the other. This joy is particularly elevated. It has a very general bearing. It is for this reason that one cannot count it among the Mitzvot*, as the Rambam emphasizes [12] regarding the Injunctions which are general principles. Moreover, according to some, the joy is only a custom, and what is said of the Hakafos* [13] applies to it as well [14].

May Hashem grant that this joy penetrate the last force of the spirit so that each one take the firm resolution to submit himself fully to Hashem by setting a time to study Torah, by fulfilling the Mitzvot*, by praying with fervor.

All these resolutions will be followed by effect, and, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, says in the chassidic discourse in this fascicle, "we will obtain the beneficial light in material and spiritual abundance."

(So as not to contravene the holiness of the festival, I do not sign this letter.)
