By the grace of Hashem,
4 Tammuz* 5710,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and conducts his
activities faithfully, Rav Y. HaCohen (note 1: Rav Yaakov Katz, of Chicago. See, regarding him, letter no. 6666),
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz*, with the check that was enclosed, payable to the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch*. You authorized me to allocate the amount as I see fit and I have therefore distributed it as follows: one tenth for the Maamad* (note 2: See letters no. 7809, 7812, 7814, 7830, 7836, and 7853), half of the balance for the printing and shipment of the booklet of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, the seventieth anniversary of the birth of the Rebbe. Indeed, it was inscribed on this booklet that an anonymous donor wishes, in this way, to strengthen his attachment to the Rebbe, through the publication of his teachings and their dissemination throughout the world. I chose this formulation deliberately, for I do not know what the state of your attachment is. I hope I do not offend you by making this remark.
I observe indeed, at the present time, numerous miracles of the Rebbe. If you claim that "in your case, there is nothing new," there must necessarily be a reason for this. Perhaps the Rebbe thinks that your building should not be sold now. That is why no buyer presents himself. But it may also be a weakening of your attachment, which may Hashem prevent. Yet, I am convinced that you also experience miracles, for example with your associate, but you do not notice them all. That is why I used a part of your donation for the dissemination of the Rebbe's teachings. For this is one of the most effective means of attaching oneself to the leader of Israel, the master of these teachings.
The last half of this sum was given to the office of discreet activities, through which the Rebbe would come to the aid, in secret, of honorable persons. And this activity continues still at the present time. This booklet will appear in a few days. Furthermore, I am enclosing the Keser Shem Tov* and you will kindly confirm having received it. I wish you all the best and await your good news,
Rav M. S.,
