Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7868 — Chassidus and halachic sources

You tell me that, according to some, it matters little to find the reference (note 1: This letter follows letter no. 556, which should be consulted), the source in the words of our Sages, the Halachah* that is cited by Chassidus*, for Chassidus* is itself a reference. I do not share this view. Furthermore, very often, by consulting the reference, one understands more deeply the idea of Chassidus* (note 2: Which is based on this reference). Moreover, it is a more clearly Chassidic* attitude to say: "There exists a reference, but I have not found it" (note 3: Which is a mark of humility), rather than: "I am certain that there is no reference and the Rebbe himself introduced this concept." One can verify concretely to what extent the Tzemach Tzedek* elaborates on this point in his notes. But this idea will not be developed here.

ב"ה, ט' טבת, תשי"א
.. ומש"כ אשר י"א שאין נוגע כ"כ למצוא מקור או מקום מחז"ל או דין שהובא בדא"ח כי זהו בעצמו המקור - אני לא כן הוא עמדי. ולא עוד, אלא כשרואים במקור הרי כמה וכמה פעמים נתוסף הבנה גם בהענין בדא"ח. - ולכאורה הוא גם חסידישער, לומר אשר ישנו מקור ואני לא מצאתיו מלומר שאני יודע ברור שאין מקור והרבי חידש זה ע"פ הוראה וכו' -. ובמוחש נראה בהגהות הצ"צ בדא"ח עד כמה נתיגע בזה.
