By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me of your state of health. You feel your strength diminishing, the doctor prescribes tests for you, and you ask me what I think about it. You may indeed follow his advice and have these tests performed. Regarding this weakness, you will scrupulously eat your breakfast and, from time to time, you will set a fixed study, which will be in the revealed part of the Torah* or in Chassidus*, so that it gives you pleasure, in the most literal sense, as it is said: "It (note 1: The Torah*) shall be healing for your flesh and strengthening for your bones." When I am near the tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will mention your name and that of your wife, so that you may have good health. I hope that you will give me good news in this matter.

I am surprised, on the other hand, that you say nothing to me about your moral health. Perhaps you have heard the story (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 1036) of an American who came to seek the advice of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, about his lumber business. After answering his question, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, spoke to him about the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. The man remarked that his question was not about that and my father-in-law, the Rebbe, replied: "What do you mean? You seek my advice about a matter in which you are the expert while I myself know nothing about it. On the other hand, you do not ask me about the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, which are my primary domain, the occupation of my ancestors and of the ancestors of my ancestors?" Of course, this has nothing to do with what is the subject of our discussion (note 3: For the recipient of this letter already practices the Torah* and the Mitzvos*), but in any event, the study of the Gemara* and its commentaries or that of Chassidus* are indeed my domain, much more than medicine. What, then, is the meaning of this? With my blessing for a speedy recovery and good health, for yourself and for your wife,

במענה על מכתבו המודיע ממצב בריאותו, אשר מרגיש תשישות הכוחות והרופא רוצה לעשות בדיקות וכו' ושואל דעתי-

קאן ער אים נאכגעבן ולעשות הבדיקות. ובנוגע לתשישות הכחות - יהי זהיר בפת של שחרית, ומזמן לזמן ילמוד איזה לימוד, אם בנגלה אם בדא"ח, וואס ער זאל פון עם הנאה האבן גאר בפשטות. ורפאות תהי לשרך ושיקוי לעצמותיך.

בהיותי על הציון של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר אזכירו ואת זוגתו תי' לבריאות הנכונה.

ותקותי שיבשרני בשורות טובות בזה.

ולפלא שאינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד בריאותו ברוחניות.

ואולי שמע הסיפור של א' מבני אמריקא שבא לשאול עצת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר במסחר עצים שלו. ואחרי המענה בזה והמשיך כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר להורותו בעניני תומ"צ - אמר שהרי לא אודות זה שאל. וא"ל כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר: כלפי לייא. מסחר שאתה המומחה ואין זה שייך אלי - תשאל בעצתי. ובתומ"צ שזהו מעניני העקרים ומעסק אבותי ואבות אבותי - בזה אין אתה שואל.

כמובן אין הנדון דומה כלל - אבל, בכל אופן, יש לי שייכות יותר ללימוד גפ"ת ודא"ח מאשר לחכמת הרפואה. וא"כ כלפי לייא?

בברכת רפואה קרובה ובריאות הנכונה לו ולזוגתו יחיו.
