may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

From time to time, I receive news of your studies, at the Yeshivah* of Manchester. In certain respects, I am satisfied with your behavior, but, even if everything were perfect, one knows the saying (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 7777) of the Rebbe Maharash*, which was repeated many times by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, according to which: "if good is good, is better not better?" Moreover, in several respects, it seems, your attitude and your constancy in study must be strengthened and reinforced.

The purpose of the present letter is therefore to underline for you the meaning of the title that the Rebbe Rashab* gave to the students of the Yeshivah* (note 4: In his time), defining what they must be: "lights to illuminate." It is therefore quite evident that the same must apply to the sons of these students. Each of you must engrave in his mind the immense responsibility that rests upon him. You must set an example for all the other students of the Yeshivah* and be emulated, not only in your study of Chassidus* and in your fervent prayer, but also in your study of the revealed part of the Torah*, in general, and in your relations with other people.

I hope that these few words, quantitatively brief, will suffice to motivate you and make you aware of the truth. You joined the Yeshivah* of Manchester not only in your own interest, but also to exercise a beneficial influence on those around you, to give the image of what a Yeshivah* student must be, both profoundly and outwardly. I therefore await your good news upon receipt of this letter. You will confirm to me that all of this has been followed by action, down to the smallest detail. With my blessing for success in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, with fear of Hashem,

מזמן לזמן הנני מקבל ידיעות ע"ד לימודם בישיבת מנשסתר. ואף כי באיזה פרטים הנני שבע רצון מהנהגתם, אבל אם גם הכל הי' כדבעי למהוי, הנה ידוע פתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש נ"ע, שחזר עליו כמה פעמים כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע: "אז גוט איז גוט, איז בעסער ניט בעסער:". ובפרט שבאיזה פרטים כנראה, הנהגתם והתמדתם בלימוד צריכה עידוד וחיזוק.

ובאתי בזה לעוררם, ע"ד שם התואר שנתן כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע להתמימים, שהם צריכים להיות - נרות להאיר. ואם כן בפשטות הוא, שזהו צריך להיות בבני התמימים. ועל כל אחד ואחד מכם להיות חקוק בזכרונו, האחריות הגדולה המוטלת עליו, שהוא צריך לשמש מופת לכל שאר התלמידים הנמצאים בהישיבה, אשר ממנו יראו וכן יעשו, ולא לבד בלימוד החסידות ובעבודת התפלה, אלא ג"כ בלימוד הנגלה בכלל, ובעניני דרך ארץ שבין אדם לחבירו.

אקוה אשר דבריי אלה המועטים בכמות יספיקו לעוררם ולהעמידם על האמת, אשר בתכלית בואם לישיבת מנשסתר, הוא לא רק לתועלת עצמם אלא להשפיע ג"כ על הסביבה שלהם, לשמש דוגמא איך שבן ישיבה צריך להיות בפנימיות וגם בחיצוניות.

אחכה לבשורה טובה מהם מקבלת מכתבי זה, ואשר נגשו להביא את הענין בפועל ממש בכל הפרטים הנ"ל.
