To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Shmuel (note 1: Rav S. Zalmanov. See, regarding him, letter no. 7870), the Shochet*,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter. For various reasons, the present letter was delayed until now:

A) You describe to me your situation, regarding the Shechitah*, which, lately, has been weakening. You are therefore currently making an attempt as secretary of the Chabad* association, in Tel Aviv. You ask me whether you should definitively accept this work or wait to find an easier one. In my opinion, there is no reason to wait. It is a pity to waste time doing nothing. If the Chassidim* consider that you are suitable for this position, you must adopt it. Indeed, our Sages tell us that in such a case: "grab and eat, grab and drink," which means that you must, on the contrary, devote yourself to it eagerly and bring your contribution to this Chassidim* association. For, in the end, it is indeed about disseminating the wellsprings (note 2: Of Chassidus*) outward. Without a doubt, this will be the receptacle for developing and bringing to light success in your personal activities.

B) You allude to your son Yechiel Yehudah, who has been appointed to the military chaplaincy. You ask me whether he should think about seeking a good match. This is particularly wise and may Hashem grant that he know success in this matter. Surely you are using your influence on your son to intensify the brightness of: "the candle of Hashem (which) is the soul of man" that he carries within him. Moreover, in this way, he will reap many fruits from his students, in the army. There, it is particularly important to communicate the fear of Hashem, with the greatest eagerness, by speaking words emanating from the heart, as it is said: "And, your camp shall be holy," as is explained regarding the beautiful captive woman.

You will kindly transmit my greetings to your son Yechiel Yehudah and my blessing, that Hashem grant him the merit of using the strengths that are hidden within him and that he inherited from his fathers, the Chassidim*. He will use them concretely and he will disseminate "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," that is to say, the teaching of Chassidus*. With my blessing,

במענה על מכתבו, אשר מפני כמה סיבות נתאחרה התשובה עד עתה:

א) מתאר מצבו בענין השחיטה שבזמן האחרון הולך ופוחת ועובד עתה בתור נסיון כמזכיר באגו"ח בתל אביב, ושואל חוו"ד אם לקבל העבודה או לחכות עד שיזדמן לפניו דבר יותר קל,

הנה לדעתי אין כדאי לחכות, כי חבל על הזמן ההולך בהעדר עבודה ופעולה, ואם מצאו אנ"ש שמתאים הוא לעבודה הנ"ל הרי אדרבה צ"ל בזה, כמו שהורו אותנו רז"ל בענינים כמו אלו: חטוף ואכול חטוף ושתה, ז"א אדרבה לעבוד בזה בזריזות ולמלאות חלקו בארגון אנ"ש, שסוכ"[ס] הנה נפוצים עי"ז המעיינות חוצה, אשר בטח ישמש זה ג"כ כלי להגדלת והמשכת הצלחה בעניניו הפרטים.

ב) כותב ע"ד בנו יחיאל יהודא שי' שסידרו אותו ברבנות הצבאית ושואל חוו"ד, אם כדאי שיתענין בענין נכבדות.

הנה נכון הדבר במאד. ויה"ר שיהי' בהצלחה. ובטח משתמש הוא בהשפעתו על בנו שי' להגדיל את אור דנר ה' נשמת אדם הנמצא בתוכו, ובפרט שעי"ז יוכל ג"כ לראות פירות בהמושפעים שלו בתוך הצבא, אשר שם נחוצה ביותר וביותר ההשפעה דיר"ש במרץ גדול ובדברים היוצאים מן הלב, וכמ"ש והי' מחנך קדוש וכדמובא מענין דאשת יפ"ת וכו'.

ומטובו לפרוש בשלום בנו יחיאל יהודא שי' ולמסור לו ברכתי, אשר יזכהו השי"ת להשתמש בהכחת הצפונים בו, מורשת אבות דגזע אנ"ש, להביאם אל הפועל ולהשפיע על כל סביבתו בנר מצוה ותורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות.
