To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Eliezer (note 1: Rav A. E. Shmerkovitch of Winsenburry, Cape Town, South Africa),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter, with some delay. You describe your situation to me and you ask my opinion: should you go to our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*? You find yourself, however, in a country where many people who fear Hashem have recently settled, in addition to those who were already there previously. Now, who knows clearly for what reason Divine Providence led you to that place? It is said that "Hashem prepares the steps of man" and, in my view, you must therefore put into practice the injunction: "Do not abandon your place." You will therefore influence those around you, in the fitting manner, to strengthen them in the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, to warm them with a Jewish warmth.

May Hashem grant you long days and good years in order to illuminate around you, to strengthen "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," as well as the luminaire of the Torah*, that is to say Chassidus*, its customs and its practices, even through a single positive action. Indeed, the Tanya* explains, in chapter 25, that a single Mitzvah*, whatever it may be, exerts, on high, an eternal and immutable effect (note 2: The light that results from it is definitively acquired). One also knows the saying of the Baal Shem Tov*, which we have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, according to which a soul descends here below and clothes itself in a Jewish body, for several decades, in order to render a service, material or spiritual, to one's fellow. With my blessing for long days and good years, in every sense of the term,

קבלתי מכתבו - באיחור זמן קצת - בו כותב על דבר מצבו ושואל חוות דעתי, אם יסע עתה לאה"ק ת"ו ע"י משיח צדקנו.

והנה לדעתי כיון שנמצא במדינה אשר בזמן האחרון באו שם כמה אנשים יראי ד' נוסף על אלו שהיו דרים שם מקודם, וכיון שאין איש אתנו יודע על ברור הכוונה העליונה במה שנמצא הוא במקום פלוני כי רק מד' מצעדי גבר כוננו, הרי יקיים בעצמו מקומך על תנח וישפיע על סביבתו באופן המתאים לחזקם בתורה ומצוה און אנווארימען מיט אידישע ווארימקייט, והשי"ת יתן לו אריכות ימים ושנים טובות להאיר בסביבתו ובתוספת בנר מצוה ותורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות דרכי' ומנהגי', ואפילו בשביל פעולה אחת טובה, הנה ידוע הכתוב בתניא פרק כ"ה אשר בעשיית מצוה איזה שתהי',הנה למעלה הוא ענין נצחי לעולם ועד, וידוע ג"כ פתגם הבעש"ט מה ששמענו כמה פעמים מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר נשמה יורדת למטה ומלובשת כמה עשרות בשנים בגוף ישראל בכדי לעשות טובה ליהודי בגשמיות או ברוחניות.
