Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7956 — Shidduchim

By the grace of Hashem,

12 Adar* 5713,

I greet you and bless you,

You have informed me of the engagement of your daughter (note 1: See, on this subject, letter no. 7952). May Hashem grant that it be celebrated at a good and fruitful moment, that they build an everlasting edifice, based on the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, as they are illuminated by the luminaire of the Torah*, which is Chassidus*.

It is known that in everything that belongs to the domain of holiness, advancement is progressive. One must therefore find the appropriate means to bring her fiance closer to Chassidus*, to its customs and its practices. Moreover, our Sages say that: "a son-in-law is like a son" and it is known that the father is obligated to educate his son. Furthermore, regarding the study of the Torah*, it is the Torah* itself that obligates him to do so (note 2: It is therefore not a rabbinical injunction), as ruled by the Admur HaZaken*, at the beginning of his Laws of Torah* Study, as well as in various texts. It is quite clear that this includes the study of Chassidus* as well. With my blessing of Mazal Tov*,

במענה על הודעותו מקשוה"ת של בתו תחי, יתן השי"ת שתהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ובבנין עדי עד על יסודי התורה ומצוה כפי שהם מוארים במאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות.

והנה ידוע דרך הקדושה שהוא לאט לאט, ובמילא, צריך הי' למצוא דרכים המתאימים לקרב את המיול"ח, לתורת החסידות דרכי' והנהגותי', ובפרט ע"פ מרז"ל דחתנו כבנו, וידוע שמצות חינוך בבן היא מוטלת על האב, ובפרט מצות חינוך דתלמוד תורה שהוא מדאורייתא על האב, וכפסק רבינו ז"ל בהלכות ת"ת בתחלתו ובכמה מקומות. ופשוט אשר לימוד תורת החסידות הוא בכלל זה.
