Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8017 — Chinuch

Volume 21 · Letter 264 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

15 Iyar* 5714,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to

communal needs, Rav Menachem Zeev HaLevi (note 1: Rav M. Z. Gringlass, of Montreal. See, regarding him, letter no. 7774),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 10 Iyar* and the one that preceded it, dated 2 Iyar*. I thank you for the good news you announce to me, the improvement in the situation of the students, in their study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, as well as that of the people for whom you had asked me for a blessing. May Hashem grant you, also in the future, the success of announcing only good news, always and every day, of what takes place in your four cubits and, more generally, in the part of the world entrusted to you.

You allude to the addition of students at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Montreal. One knows what the Rambam* says, in his commentary on the Mishnah*, which is cited by Chassidus*: one does not attract a child to study through orders and even less with sticks. One must, on the contrary, give him sweets and do so in accordance with the present situation, without taking into account that of the future, even if a child may naturally be inclined to submission and constraint. How much more so is this the case here, for proper order must, in any event, be respected.

The present letter was delayed and, in the meantime, I have duly received the book Vayaged Yaakov*, as well as your letters of the 14th and 18th of this month. I await good news of your visit to Mr. Shazar (note 2: See, regarding him, letter no. 7959). I thank you for it in advance. With my blessing and awaiting your good news,

M. Schneerson,

By the grace of Hashem,

18 Iyar* 5714,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of

multiple knowledge, who devotes himself to communal

needs, Rav Sh. Y. (note 3: Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin. See, regarding him, letter no. 7931),

I greet you and bless you,

In conversing here with Mr. Shazar (note 4: See, regarding him, letter no. 7959), I was able to verify, with pleasure, the extent to which he respects you. He also told me that he took an active part in having the radio broadcast on this course (note 5: Of Torah*) entrusted to you. I asked him what effect this would have on the encyclopedia (note 6: The Talmudic Encyclopedia, of which Rav Zevin is the author. Would its writing be delayed due to this broadcast?), which is a Mitzvah* that cannot be entrusted to someone else (note 7: No one other than Rav Zevin possessing the competence and erudition necessary for its writing). He gave me the assurance that there would be none. Moreover, the Encyclopedia addresses a very specific public (note 8: The scholars of the Torah*), but not the radio broadcast. He described its importance with much enthusiasm.
